Solved Intel Rapid Storage Technology boot issue

Hi there,
I have windows 8 Enterprise x64 RTM, an asus sabertooth z77 mobo.

I have installed windows 8 in AHCI sata mode and it works flawlessly but I have a solid state drive for caching.

So I backed up my data, changed to RAID mode in BIOS and proceeded to reinstall. Windows 8 installer sees my harddrives in raid mode and continues to install fine. And that's where fine ends.
I get blue screens before the personalization screens start "winload.exe is missing or corrupt". Randomly this morning it just worked, I got to my desktop and started installing drivers - worked fine. Installed RST 11.5.0.1184 (beta) - rebooted and bluescreened "a required device is missing or failed".

Now this is where things are unexplainable for me. If I boot to my installation media and quit it at the first chance, the system reboots and boots into windows 8 flawlessly. When I shutdown or restart windows - at the next boot it bluescreens but if I boot from my installation media and quit, then it restarts and boots fine.

Hello Jim, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The intel Raid-Sata-Ata-Ahci RST 11.5.2.1001 WHQL version worked best for me. You might give them a try as well to see how they do for you at the Station Driver link below. :)

Hope this helps,

Thanks for that crazy fast reply,
I have downloaded and installed 11.5.2.1001 as above with the same results - the weird thing I have noticed is that inside the RST program - it says it is version 11.5.0.1207

I thought maybe I installed the wrong one but during install I see it writing registry entries stating 11.5.2.1001 - weird

Odd, does it show 11.5.2.1001 as the version number in Programs and Features?

May just be a version entry they missed updating in that version then. Well, I suppose that you could uninstall this one and give 11.5.0.1207 from the same link above a try.

I have installed another machine with RST 11.2.0.1006 perfectly fine, tried that version on this one and I caused windows not to boot at all - after removing any signs of acceleration from RAID my system did a self repair and now boots correctly as long as I don't try to accelerate it. The system generated a log file - after reading through it, it seems my original winload.exe was due to the system trying to boot from the windows 8 recovery environment

K, this is a stretch BUT...
I have ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe mobo and Win8. I have loaded in the Intel Rapid Start Beta driver for Win8 IRST_V11501184_Win8. Now I had a lot of issues with a couple of hard drives after this (or before this- like I said, a stretch). It turns out that for some reason my Samsung 2TB hard drives suddenly did not like running on the 6GB/s ports on my mobo. One was flaking out and one would not show up on the SATA list in the UEFI. Changing the drives over to one of the last 4 non SATA 3 ports fixed all my problems. I boot from a Vertex 3 SSD BTW which works fine. I just bought a 3TB hard drive to replace the two 2TB drives that have been giving me troubles.

Version 11.5.0.1207 has already been pulled from Intel's download center. They cause hangs while rebooting or problems at Windows startup. I uninstall them and use the latest WHQL for Windows 7, which are 11.2.0.1006 and they are working fine.

The hangs I was getting when rebooting Windows 8 are gone now. The only problem I'm having is that my optical drive can't be accessed by ImgBurn or other burning software. I get no drives listed or errors. Bot my drives are connected to the Intel controller and are listed and visible in Windows Explorer and Device Manager.

I'm looking into this as I write this to see what is the cause.

I reinstalled Windows 8 and leave it with the Windows default drivers. It have been working well. I would say that we are better with the default ones and wait for a proper and working release with official Windows 8 RTM support.

How are they? With some beta versions, I noticed a little stuttering when browsing drives/folders and the rare ocassional hang when rebooting or sometimes at startup.

I think I will keep the stock ones until Intel releases an official update to their website.
