Windows 8 not reading external usb drives

I have windows 8 64 bit consumer preview and this SUCKS, my 2 external hard drives worked before now the maxtor will not open correctly and when i click the usb program it does not open all the way. The other external that I have will will not show in explorer but when I connect I hear sound. Both were working perfectly in windows 7. DO NOT DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 8, as it will not work properly. I also cannot access anything under my administrator account which tells me I have to create a user account. Im thinking about selling this windows desktop. Only yr old just out of warranty. Anyone interested. ATL here. Dell inspirion

    Hi MacGuy,
Welcome to Sevenforums. Feel sorry for your USB problem.
Before having conclusion on Windows 8 (Windows Release Preview is the latest release) you'd better try fixing the issue as I believe it works for most of us in this forum.

You might try installing WRP 64/32-bit (64-bit is preferable if you have 4 or more GB physical memory), when done, be sure to install all available driver (windows 7 64/32-bit drivers mostly will do). If you are running Intel system, make sure you properly install the latest appropriate Intel chipset. From there mostly all USB port will work properly (presuming all your ext HDD is are good condition).

I believe there maybe an issue with some motherboards and USB drivers. I installed Windows 8 standalone with no issues but when I tried to upgrade Win7 to Windows 8 all went well except the USB drivers. Windows 8 keeps telling me the current drivers cause Windows 8 to become unstable so it shut them off. The motherboard being used is an ASUS motherboard and of course ASUS has not updated their drivers for Windows 8 so I guess it is a waiting game. Curious why the standalone version worked though.
