Hi

I have had an Asus laptop with windows 8.1 for almost two years. Two days ago, I found that I can no longer adjust the brightness. When I use F5/F6 the brightness bar goes up and down between two levels but the screen brightness isn't changing. This has happened before but fixed itself within a day. This doesn't seem to be happening this time. I have checked some solutions to this problem but most people seem to have this problem after an update or upgrade to windows 8.1. This is the same operating system I have been using for two years and, as far as I can tell, there has been no update in the last week. I've checked the drivers and there doesn't seem to have been a recent update.

Thanks
Alex

I can only tell you what happened to me when I ran into the same problem. First, my Toshiba notebook limits the display brightness whenever I am running on battery. This is because full brightness runs down the battery much faster.

So, assuming you are running with the charger connected, make sure you didn't accidently activate/enable some "Eco" mode. This is what I did once and didn't realize it. Eco mode dims the display and prevents manual adjustment. On my Toshiba, there is a special button I must have accidently brushed across or pressed. On other notebooks, I have seen similar functions controlled by a Fn + F-key combination. So you might check your manual to see if something like that didn't happen.

Otherwise, your monitor could be failing. :( Let's hope it is not that.
