Windows Smartscreen says newest display driver is harmful

I downloaded the display driver Crimson Edition 16.1 from amd's website and when trying to install it, the windows smartscreen shows up and says, "Windows smartscreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk." Why would amd create a new display driver that puts a computer at risk? Is this an error? Should I ignore the message and run it anyway?

IF the driver really was developed by AMD, then it will not put the computer at risk. Most likely the update is so new, Microsoft just has not had time enough to verify it.

Why were you upgrading? Did something prompt you? I ask because I have an AMD and just checked my settings and mine is reported to be current with version 15.12.

And note too, I generally recommend using the drivers from the card makers site, not AMD (or NVIDIA). This is because card makers often tweak and modify their cards.

That is because Microsoft has not updated their Driver Signature for AMD's Crimson, which is the newer control panel.

Let AMD know. They may want some log ifo from you, when they respond.

Check the Forums at amd.com, to see if others are getting the same behavior.

Let's make sure the blame is put where due - if blame is the right word. Hardware makers need to submit their drivers to Microsoft in a timely basis if they want their drivers properly tagged. And again, if for example, this is an ASUS card or a EVGA card, I recommend you get drivers from there, unless they point you directly to the GPU makers.

Itaregid, sorry for being late on updating. Been dealing with body issues (severe pain), along with working on getting 6rd Tunneling working with my Cisco Gateway (done and working great). Also the wife got a new toy (stupid Neato Robot Vac), that I am ready to chuck out the door, because the darn thing will not run the Lidar disc, while going through its pre-check before running the cleaning program. Spent the afternoon troubleshooting that issue. Was fun playing with it. Just glad it is no longer punching in a bunch of Hex codes to get it to do something or run a test mode.

Here is the closes thing to a searchable database for all current manufacturers and links to the driver info. Windows 10 Drivers

I am seeing too many out of date links from 3rd quarter 2015, when I searched the info.

"All" current manufacturers? Yeah right. There are 1000s of hardware manufactures who make 1000s and 1000s of products. That is hardly a comprehensive list.

I would not use nor do I recommend using that data base or any similar 3rd party data base, or any 3rd party driver update program. I say again, it is best to simply go to the source and visit the hardware makers site. There is no need to use a man-in-the-middle who may alter the driver, mislabel the driver, or otherwise mess it up.

Same here. The Linux compatible dbase is even outdated, when it comes to trying to find EOL hardware.

As long as everyone keeps each other in the loop on here, for what hardware does and does not work. Is going to be our best bet.
