Unable to access internet after installing Windows 8

I'm not able to connect to the internet using an Acer Aspire E 17. The product model is E5-773-579L. I installed Windows 8 over Windows ten and formatted the old Windows, the only thing which I can't do is use the internet.

I've tried with some drivers that I found but they installed and didn't do anything. Without an Ethernet cable, I get a 'not connected - no connections are available'. When I troubleshoot, I get told to plug an Ethernet cable in.

With the Ethernet cable, I'm getting 'Identifying ... - No internet Access'. When I troubleshoot there, it attempts to reset the Ethernet adapter, then I get the error '"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration."

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? What drivers do I need?

You probably need to uninstall anything that says realtek or lan/ethernet/ whatever your network cards are in the "features and Programs"

uninstall the drivers from there..

then go to the website of your exact model computer and find the correct wireless/ lan / ethernet drivers.. for windows 8..

Download Drivers and Manuals | Acer Official Site

Thanks for your reply.

This is part of the problem - there are no drivers in the control panel except an Ethernet cable one which I installed. By the way - Ethernet is now working. I assume it is that driver that's making it working, but I have no idea in the end what actually made it work.

Another problem is that I can't seem to find any drivers for my model, for Windows 8. If I go to the link above, the only drivers I can find for:

Notebook -> Aspire -> Aspire 773 or Aspire 773G (not sure which one it is or the difference between them, but the full model number is E5-773-579L)

The only drivers I can see are for Windows 10. I'm not sure what wireless drivers I actually need, e.g. from:

Wireless LANAtherosWireless LAN Driver (NFA335 HAI)10.0.0.31849.2 MB2015/09/25Download
Wireless LANAtherosWireless LAN Driver (NFA335 Liteon)10.0.0.31849.2 MB2015/09/25Download

Wireless LANIntelWireless LAN Driver18.12.0.3184.6 MB2015/09/25Download

But all I tried did nothing apart from one, which said it was incompatible (I also assume that this will probably be the one I want). Also, while I'm on the subject of drivers that are needed, the touchpad does not work. I also attempted to download drivers from the page for that but again, they did nothing.

According to Device Manager, the missing drivers are:

  • Network Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Memory Controller
  • PCI Simple Communications Controller
  • SM Bus Controller
  • USB2.0-CRW

I assume the last one is for the touchpad as I verified the disk drive and all USB ports seem to be working. I've tried right clicking -> update drivers and no drivers for any can be found online by Windows. I've also scanned them all for hardware changes and nothing changed with them.

Look, in your first post you say you installed windows 8 over windows 10??? yes??

if you did, how did you do that? cause i have a strong feeling you didn't do it the correct way.. did you let windows reformat the drive?

Did you do a "clean" install? that process needs to be clearly explained as this may be why your computer is all over the place right now..

I have a feeling you'll need to reinstall windows the correct way.. by letting it reformat the drive.. did you do this when you installed windows 8?

if you don't know what I mean, then I'm sure you didn't..

also

have you even tried this???

also.. your Acer probably comes with ACER recovery software or update software.. type ACER in the search and see what shows up.

When I reinstalled Windows, I formatted it from the disk and then installed it fresh completely. There was a folder called Windows.old with the old installation which I removed afterwards though.

I have tried automatically detecting the product, and it gave me the serial number - but it was the first one out of the two I found above, with the exact same drivers I had already tried. The product number is E5-773. The only OS available in that dropdown box is Windows 10. Since using the auto-detect application, it installed .NET 3.5 which I think I needed anyway. Not sure if that's particularly relevant to this specific problem or not, but it might be useful

These are all drivers included in the chipset.
First you need to install the chipset drivers and reboot.
Then it will probably find the networkadapter/driver because it will have installed the networkcontroller

There are no windows 8.1 drivers on the websitepage for your model E5 773 because you are downgrading from a windows 10 ready machine.
Hopefully all the windows 10 drivers will also work on windows 8.1.

I installed the chipset and it has fixed some of the problems. Unfortunately though, the network controller and a few others aren't fixed:

  • Network Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Simple Communications Controller
  • USB2.0-CRW

Now that I have installed the chipset, would the wireless drivers from the list I installed before now work if I installed them again?

Thank you so much, the wireless is now working. I honestly didn't even think it was possible after seeing no Windows 8 drivers. Thank you.

Now there are only four errors left, and only the only noticeable error is that the touchpad doesn't work:

  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Simple Communications Controller
  • USB2.0-CRW

Yes, actually there are a few. Firstly I have a copy of Windows 8 Pro, and I wanted the Pro features. Secondly, I don't want the rubbish that comes with Windows 10, such as Cortana, Edge .etc. I also don't like the fact that Microsoft monitor what you have on your computer and if you use something pirated, they will disable it. Not that I use things pirated, but to me it's the privacy that matters, they simply shouldn't be monitoring what's on your laptop. I also don't like the fact you can't disable updates, and in Windows 8 you can do a lot of the things much easier. Another reason is old games that probably won't be compatible. Some games I play were released in 2002, such as Empires Dawn of The Modern World, and it's very hard to get it to work with Windows 8. I suspect it will not work at all with Windows 10.

And from what I've seen from Windows 10, I don't like it anyway. It seems full of garbage and quite heavy. I'm a minimalist, I like things very minimal. True, you could argue Windows 8 has some of these things, but in Windows 8 they are much easier to disable - and especially using Group Policy on the Pro version.

Ok well, thanks for the reply.. couple of things just to let you know.

Your Privacy is already gone whether you know it or not, Unless you have some unbelievable ISP you pay a bunch of money for that strictly has a contract with you that they don't log and will never under any circumstances show anyone your connections etc.. blah blah.. you know that ain't happening.

Anything you do has to go through your ISP and just one way that can be tracked back to you, is out of a "MAC address" which each and every single computer has individual address.. (build-in)

There is also the big "backdoor" controversy that is built in to computer chips so no matter what people (whoever they may be..) have the ability to get into your computer no matter what you do.. until you build an intel chip yourself, you will never be safe from privacy issues... so don't worry about that..

about the "pirate" thing, you don't have to worry so much about the small stuff, I do not condone the use of Pirated material but I will tell you this, Piracy is being attacked by targeting the guys who "SEED" or "share".. at some point, they will target the little guys who "download" pirated material but that's not for awhile, as there will be 7 billion+ people that download pirated things and I don't think our jail cells can handle it.. ha. Or even the courtrooms and mailings of fines to 7 billion people..

Anyway, the whole point of this actually is that it's funny you don't want to use windows 10 for privacy reasons but you may want to read up on INTEL Managment Engine more..

It's not neccesarily Intel Management Engine that you should be concerned with, it's INTEL company themselves and Microsoft themselves..

Thinking windows 8 is somehow more secure than windows 10 Privacy-wise certainly isn't the case.. Microsoft knows fully well how they built windows XP/Vista/7/8 and 10.. they know how to get into your computer.. either by intel's chips or their own backdoor pre-built operating system..

So don't think your privacy is secure whether you are on 8 or 10.. just because you disabled updates..

You only true privacy is to not plug into the internet at all.. unfortunately that doesn't work for what we want to do.. so..

You can try services like Private Internet Access.. but I'm sure they still are cooperating with the "big" guys if someone wants your info..

It's all about money.. and this "privacy" you are scared of is probably more of Microsoft selling information to other companies for more profit.. thus they gather and collect information on how you use your computer.. profit.. as usual.. not to take down people to jail. at least not yet..

anyway about Intel Management with your Windows 8.. (yes, it's pre-built in too..)

That's odd - for the 8.1 driver I'm getting "This Computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software." - no additional details.

I installed the second driver and now only the following problems remain:

  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Simple Communications Controller

I've also been getting command prompt popping up on my screen every few hours for the last two days or so now. Until this morning I never managed to get a screenshot of it. I searched yesterday in Task Scheduler but I couldn't find anything that matched the timeframes I've been seeing for it.

I also searched in Google the file paths but couldn't really find anything. It came up at 9:28 this morning, and exactly an hour later at 10:28 it's done it again while I've been typing this. I've also seen it at 12:58, 1:58 and several hours later. But it's always exactly the same time which is why I thought it was a task.

Any ideas what I can do to prevent this?

To brooksndun - True privacy has been compromised on the Internet and many places. But the internet is different, it's not a personal computer, that's how I see it. It's more about consciousness I think. Because I'm aware of the privacy problems, I'm very reluctant to upgrade - if I knew nothing of them, I would be more likely. A friend of mine blocks the monitoring things, but I wouldn't feel comfortable even with them blocked, I'd only feel comfortable if they weren't there altogether.

That's a valid point, maybe it's something I should keep in mind ... And those links, particularly the last one were very interesting, it was very astonishing to see what happens without your knowledge.

Regarding the game, thanks for the link, it was useful. I had to do the same thing for it to work on this version of Windows 8 - which I was surprised at: September 2015 Windows updates KB3086255 breaks many games – My Online Security

It turns out this was the reason for a few games not working on this machine, it was installed with other updates when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few days ago.

EDIT: Also, forgot to mention - I installed the chipset again and there are still the same three errors.

The first driver installed, but the second driver got to the end of the installation and said there was a fatal error. Here is the log attached.

Now down to two errors only, though the touchpad still does not work:

  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller

When I reinstalled Windows, I formatted it from the disk and then installed it fresh completely. There was a folder called Windows.old with.....l

Hey, glad Lifetec seems to be finding drivers for you.. that's awesome.

Just for other helpful ideas, when this gets to a point that you are tired of waiting more than a week of trying to get windows 8 drivers for a Pre-built windows 10 Computer..

ifyou have time, which you appear to have since it's been 5 days and still trying to get drivers..

Here are some resources for you to read and try also.

Unfortunately most of these programs should have been used when you originally had windows 10 still on the system.. however, try them anyway and see what they detect.

Also If you ever venture into really seeing what you did have before, You can always consider using a program like Macruim Reflect Free to take a "backup image" of your whole computer right now (in windows 8) and then save that to a USB or DVD or External Hard drive, and then actually do aFactory Restore From Acer utility back to "terrible, spying, horrid" windows 10 and then run these programs and it will tell you exactly what you have driver-wise.. write it down/take a picture and then put your "backup image" (which would be exactly everything you have as right now with windows 8) back from Macrium and viola!.. you'll know what you had before..

seems like a big process.. but it's already been 5 days and this would have been done in 1 day.. more like 2 hours..

Lastly, would you like me to post my firewall log of windows 8 and what it's trying to send out ? you may be interested in what windows 8 is trying to constantly connect to and send out from your computer as soon as you plug it in to the "internet".. hehe..

anyway here are the programs :

if Lifetec is able to find you all your working drivers than all is good.. don't worry about any of this then..

except you should still maka a Macrium backup once you get all your drivers working..
