Hi guys,

Yesterday I realized that none of my USB ports were working. The last known date they were working was the 9th of December.

My laptop is an MSI GE62 2QL , running on Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Here are some screenshots from Device Manager. I've tried updating the driver software, automatically and manually. I have also tried finding the drivers from Intel's website but I couldn't find anything that worked, or wasn't looking in the right place.

Updating Automatically:

Similar result for the other two.

Updating Manually searching through C:\

I'm currently trying the drivers that MSI provides, but im not sure which one I need. Will update if situation improves.

MSI Global 64

Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks

Chipset, Intel Rapid Storage technology, Intel Management Engine. From MSI, in the order listed, not from MS Windows or Intel.
It appears to have refused those as manufacturers sometimes mod drivers for hardware in a particular Laptop.
If it has a MSI updater, use that.

I guess my next motherboard might be an intel motherboard..

modding things to force one-way is no different than Apple forcing you to use Itunes and only use their devices their way and not "your" way..

just try transferring a custom movie or custom song into your ipod/ipad/iphone and good luck the holes you'll have to dive through if you know what I mean....

so not being able to install the standard intel drivers which are updated to the latest and actually intel is a good company, doesn't seem like such a great thing to me..

but alas... the point is yes, maybe MSI forces you to install their drivers..

You may wanna read on Rapid Storage before you go installing that.. or even google Rapid Storage problems in google etc..

I've tried as you've suggested Helmut, but then ran into this.

Opening the file log location opens a window with these four files:

Tried to download the .net Framework 4.5 from Microsoft and well...rubbish. I don't know what to do about the Rapid storage technology.

You must be installing the wrong driver.. Try this too in case

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24345/Intel-Driver-Update-Utility

I tried downloading the Intel Driver Update Utility brooksndun, got it installed but this was the only thing the Utility detected.

Any other suggestions? :(

ha.. well what happened to installing the MSI drivers on your exact model of your computer??

You need to read about what Rapid Storage is before installing it... in short, it used your ram to try to make your computer faster.. but in doing so, can cause conflicts and errors which in my opinion aren't researched enough.. It's just a wanna-be overclocking thing intel decided to try out..
It does work for some.. but in general causes too many errors for others..

the funny thing is that the error you are getting is just you haven't installed Framework.. you can go to microsoft website and download that no problem and install it..

but seriously type in google "problems rapid storage" watch what comes up..

try installing the driver from MSI...

try installing the driver from MSI...

Ran into problems when installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology, which i got from the drivers on the MSI page for my laptop. Will check out problems with rapid storage now.

You also need to join the MSI forum of your actual computer and post it there.. because I'm sure they've already been through this..

I did that before starting the thread here. No replies so far and seems to be only one other person who has a similar issue to mine.

oh my god man haha.. where are you on Holiday anyway??

well next best thing is did you try to install the driver from the MSI webpage? what is the exact model of your laptop? i see some say "apache" series and etc..

the one on the msi website for your exact model must work.. that is ridiculous if it doesn't or you have the wrong model..

Does MSI bios lock drivers too?? I know Lenovo does crap like this too..

try installing the chipset driver from MSI website for your exact model.. then try installing the Intel one if that doesn't work..

sometimes you have to force to install the driver like so..

but only do this when you know for sure it's your correct driver for your exact model computer.. maybe keep the "show compatible" hardware click on...

Brooksndun, currently dubai, then singapore. Laptop is GE62 2QL, and yes, i did try installing from the MSI page, for my exact model and operating system. As for MSI blocking drivers, I have no idea. Ill look up how to force install drivers but how do i go about making sure the driver is for the exact model for my laptop?

well if that MSI webpage is exactly for the GE62 2QL... then it's the correct driver..

do what I did in the pictures above to force install the driver.. click have disk and then point it to the driver you downloaded from MSI...

you may have to extract the driver from the MSI download if it's just an exe.. like with 7zip or unrar.. etc. know what I mean??

by the way, small world, I've been to the Burj al Arab many times.. and know Al Muntaha well.. in Dubai.. never been to Singapore though.. just been told about the "ladies" all over. ha

Okay had a moment of stupidity and did not realize there was a page two. Hence only seeing pictures now. Where can I even find the driver I need. I don't even know which one I require. Should I be looking for Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26 *refer to first post with images of device manager*

Anyway its getting late here, Ill try this in 8 hours or so.

Hey brooksndun,

I tried force installing the driver. When I click on have disk and search for the driver it will only allow me to select .inf files.

Now when I open the Chipset .exe from the MSI website with winrar, the only files I can extract are these (there are 91 of them)

014.JPG

So when I click have disk in device manager to manually load the driver, I cant actually select any of those files since they arent .inf

Am I doing something wrong?

Also, don't know if its relevant or not but I can select manufacturer for drivers too I think.

Well if you actually do the install of the msg driver the normal way, it's supposed to put the inf in windows and then you would be able to go into manufacturers and choose it based on title..

But windows is supposed to do this automatically

Do you have macrium free? And a USB? I'd make a backup image of your computer (doesn't take long if you have not too large of a hard drive) and then after you make an image you have a backup you can always very easily put back..

You would need to also easily make a backup recovery cd/USB

You can also do a regular windows backup/restore image but people seem to prefer macrium.. Its free..

The reason for this is then after you make a backup (it completely copies everything) then you can go ahead and literally uninstall the chipset driver and see if windows automatically puts it back.. Which it's supposed to by default...

Hope this makes sense.. It's actually pretty easy and you should always have a recovery USB/cd anyway. You'll always have a "picture" of your computer that you can always just "snap" back in as well..

That's how I've been able to test programs and totally screw with settings to see how it affects performance etc..

So that's what I would personally do.. Assuming you have a USB or brought your external hard drive...

If not, well then you're taking a big chance by uninstalling the chipset driver.. Basically I just don't want windows to freeze on you.. That's why I'm telling you to make an "image" of your drive..

Also can you select the correct model in the manufacturers list? Have you already installed the msi chipset??

Ill give it a go, I just need to get my hands on a CD, which might prove difficult here. I guess I'll have to go on a mission to find one then.

I do have a USB I could use... but unfortunately this whole issue has rendered all my USB ports useless.

Also I have installed the chipset and I don't think I tried installing the driver by selecting the model. The models that windows displays as the options is not the same as the ones I actually have.

I have: Intel (R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #1 - 8C26
Intel (R) 8 Series/C220 Series USB EHCI #2 - 8C2D
USB Root Hub (xHCI)

Where as windows options for Intel are: Intel 8x930Hx USB Hub
Intel 8x931Hx Customer Hub

I've been trying to find the drivers directly from Intel instead with no luck. I did find what I think is what I need, however its for windows 7 only. Troubleshoot compatibility doesn't work.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...l-8-9-100-Series-and-C220-C610-Chipset-Family

Then I came across this Intel(R) 6, 7, 8 Series Chipset Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - ThinkCentre Systems - Lenovo Support (US) and thought I'd give it a try.

It continued installing up until the point of installing the driver for one of the driver models I needed. From here it ran into an unexpected error and stopped the installation.

Could it be that the model is no longer supported by Intel?
