Can I use a different internal fan for my laptop?

Hello.

My laptop's fan has been rattling, and I was trying to find the proper heatsink(internal fan only) for my laptop. I couldn't find the exact model or close to the exact model anywhere. So I was planning to use a different fan for my laptop. But ,it has lower voltage requirements than the original fan. Will it work fine with the laptop?

Did you check with the laptop manufacturer? How much lower voltage?

in the original fan, its written Rc=1.119 & Rv=1.507

the fan i want to use, its written DC 05V, 0.40A
i don't know if its sufficient information or not, so please tell me if i need to provide anything else. i haven't checked the back side of the original fan since it will need some more disassembling. let me know if i need to check that one too.

It is typically fine to use a fan with a higher voltage requirement because the fan will just run slower. But using a fan with lower voltage requirements (a 5V fan in a 12V circuit, for example) will cause the fan to spin too fast and could over heat internally causing you even more problems.

I would not put a lower voltage fan in a higher voltage circuit.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, the fan i was trying to use as a replacement didn't fit in the laptop.

Unfortunately laptop fans are usually manufactured specific to the model they go in so there is very little interoperability between different models, even more so different manufacturers. You should check to see if that laptop is still under warranty. If it is, send it in and have them fix it.

thank you. my laptop model is not available in india(the country i am from), and although its under warranty, the local support center refused to even open my laptop for memory upgrade, and they didn't come to my place when i tried to resolve it with on site warranty(that's another long story, anyways).

So while its still under warranty, I have been upgrading, repairing it with my own expenditure. So there is nothing to expect from them, in this case.
