On May 19, 2015 an automated update was installed for my ELAN smartpad. That update bricked my keyboard and the smartpad. I was lazy, so I attached an external mouse and used the onscreen keyboard for a week, but today I poked around and figured out the fix.

First, I used the Troubleshooting tool and that told me the problem was an error code 19, which told me that the problem was in the registry. You will need to edit the registry to fix the problem, so if you are completely unfamiliar with how to do that, phone a friend who knows. To find the keyboard entry in regedit, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class. Click on the files under the Class folder until you find the one that says "keyboard" in the Data column.

Next, check your UpperFilters value. The ELAN Tech update hosed that value. If your UpperFilters value says something like "ETD CeKbFilter ikbevent r KbFilter", there's your problem. Edit the value and delete the "r" and "KbFilter" (leave "ETD CeKbFilter alone) and, on a new line, enter "kbdclass". Click OK. You may get a message about requiring a new line or empty lines not permitted or something like that. Ignore it. That won't cause any problems. DO NOT RESTART THE COMPUTER YET.

Sorry for yelling. Now go to Device Manager, go to the mouse entry, go to the ELAN smartpad entry, then uninstall the driver. Once you have done that, you can restart your computer.

I searched and searched the net and couldn't find a resolution for this problem, so I am hoping this will help people out.

I really have to thank you, I have been dealing with this issue for nearly 4 days now, as even USB keyboards were not being recognized by windows. I refreshed windows, it fixed the problem, but when I updated to 8.1 the keyboard bricked again. I read a guide on Code 19 similar to your fix, but it did not include adding Kbdclass or uninstalling the ELAN driver afterwards. You have brought hours of frustration to a close, thank you so much!
