Hard drive diagnostics?

I am having BSODs again and have been told I should run diagnostics on my hard drive. The drive is a 750 GB Hitachi and I believe I need to find diagnostics for a Hitachi drive. However, when I look, I get search results that say HGST on them but *not* Hitachi. Is HGST some acronym related to Hitachi?? I'm not seeing any results at a Hitachi website so I'm not sure if I'm seeing the real Hitachi hard drive tests or just one of those sites that put a Hitachi in the domain name but are actually unrelated like hitachiharddrives.smartpcfixer.com. Also, some of these webpages don't have dates on them and feel as if they might be for very old versions of the tests. Shouldn't I run a version of the test that corresponds to a late-model drive? (My notebook is 2.5 years old.)

Some guidance on this would be appreciated :)

I *think* many of the questions to which I've answered "not sure" are irrelevant because it is a laptop but if you need to know specifically what model of cooling fans or keyboard or whatever where built in to the laptop, I can try to find that out if you tell me where to look. I don't see this information in the Windows/System display but maybe it is elsewhere. I'm not sure what a "PSU" is: Powe

Unzip and run. It should give you some idea about the health of your HD.

If it reports health status as GOOD then nothing to worry about. If there's some errors reported, usually you'll see a yellow exclamation mark in front of it.
BTW, it would be better if you post a screen shot as I did above.

Anyway, since there is no sign of an issue on my hard drive as a result of this report, can I assume the drive is fine? Or do I need to run further tests? I was quite surprised by how quickly this report came back - half a second - when the memory test I ran went for a good hour. Is this super-quick test really all I need to be satisfied that my hard drive isn't causing my BSODs?

I *think* many of the questions to which I've answered "not sure" are irrelevant because it is a laptop but if you need to know specifically what model of cooling fans or keyboard or whatever where built in to the laptop, I can try to find that out if you tell me where to look. I don't see this information in the Windows/System display but maybe it is elsewhere. I'm not sure what a "PSU" is: Powe
The disk keeps it's own records, that application is simply querying them. Running a deeper scan won't give you much more info, but could set some sectors as bad and keep data from being written to them. You can try a chkdsk /R.

Yeah, you're drive is fine. In my experience, hardware caused BSOD is almost always RAM. Could be CPU, mobo, heat, voltage issues, PSU, etc. But all that you can troubleshoot by replacing components and trying to reproduce the BSOD.

What is the BSOD error message and code? Googling that may help narrow down the cause.
