2 issues: Device Manager Crashing and Ext HD disconnects

Hi There,

so I'm currently Experiencing 2 issues. I dont know if they are related or not so I'm posting in the same thread.

1. When I Open Device Manager It's much slower than it should be. WHile its loading the hardware list It will stop responding ( you can see " not responding" in the window bar. After 30 seconds- 1 minute it responds again and the list of device/hardware shows up. There are no Yellow exclamation points showing up in the list. If I try to do a "Scan for hardware change" or if the list tries to Refresh The Device manager will completely Crash. and I get a window pop up that says " Microsfot Management Console has stopped working" No error code Nothing. Just a button that says Close program.

2. The other issue is Recently my external Buffalo Drive ( HD-GDU3) usb 3 Stops working after a certain amount of time. It just disconnects but you dont hear the Disconnecting sound. I don't notice it disconnects until it Freezes my computer. The only way to unfreeze the computer is to Unplug the drive IF I plug it back in It works Again for a short amount of time. WHen it Stops working Its still up in device manager and There is a Drive letter for it. If i click the drive letter nothing happens. Again I have to unplug it and replug it and it will work for a shot amount of time until it Disconnects/stops working again.

The drive Itself works Fine. i've tested it on several other computers ( both mac and PC) and this issue does no happen at all. Only happens on this computer. ITs not going into idle/ hybernate mode I've turned all that off in power management i think) . I've also unchecked the allow to Turn off/idle in power management of the USB hub...

This is Driving me Crazy. Not sure If these 2 issues are related

I would like to avoid having to do any kind of Fresh install/ reformat. But i understand if its unavoidable.

My build is:

-Windows 8.1 media center ( updated to the latest updates) 64 bits
-32 gigs of ram
-Intel Core i7-4930k 3.40 ghz.
-two samsung ssd drives ( 256 gb and 512 gb) , two hitachi 7200 rpm drives ( 3 tb each)
- usb 3.0 buffalo HD-GDU3

any help would be greatly appreciated.

What I would do to isolate the problems you have:
  1. Make sure the 2 SSD's are having the updated firmware.
  2. Disconnect all Hard disks except the one to boot Windows from. Also make sure that all cables in your PC are tightly connected.
  3. Open the Device Manager to see if you experience the same problem.

Please report back. Good luck.

Hey There Topgundcp

Thanks for the reply.

1. Both ssd's are up to date with firmware. There is no issues with the ssds. Both of them are samsungs. One is 256 gigs 830 series ( it has firmware CXM03B1Q) . The other is the 840 Pro 512 gigs. It has the DXM06B0Q firmware installed.

2. I've disconnected all the Hard drives except the windows boot Drive ( the 256 gig ssd is my boot drive) + the bluray player and I checked all the Cables inside the pc ( all of them are tightly connected) .

3. Yes Device manager is still slow and Still crashing when i try to refresh the hardware/device list.

Thanks again for your help.
Any other suggestions?

My question is why are you opening Device Manager? Second is that it can take the software to discover all devices connected to the computer.

If any of them are offline at the time of discovery. Device Manager will hang up.

USB pocket hard drives are set in their firmware to go into a sleep state after a certain period of time.

Make sure you do not allow the computer to place those ports into sleep mode.

@broe23

I opened device manager to Check if the faulty hard drive was showing up on the list to see if there was something going on there. . Theres an issue happening with the device manager and its keeps crashing. This is not Right and I would like to fix it.

I've unplugged everything on my computer except for the video card and ethernet card and one hard drive. I just updated the ethernet card with the latest windows 8.1 drivers and Now I'm updating the video card from scratch to make sure there isnt an issue with that.

And as I stated in my original post. all the power management settings for usb plugs , hard drives , windows hybernate/ sleept ETCC everything is OFF nothing can go into sleep mode

thanks for the reply!!!

Everything scanned successfully. IT did not find any integrity violations

The only thing that sticks out is " The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired"

after that it paused "press any key to continue".. now it scanning again doing a verification at 49%

Very good, we just want to make sure that there's no corrupted system files. Did you also update to the latest intel chipset ?
In addition, also check if you have the latest BIOS.

When you update the BIOS today. Did you clear up the CMOS ? (unplug the power, take the battery out for 10 min or so) and reset to default.
It seems evrerything we've done so far is up to date and clean up a lot of orphan devices.

You might want to run CCleaner also: CCleaner - Builds
Download the portable version so you don't have to install it then run.

Yeah. Bios Was updated that way. Thats how they Motherboard company Said to do it.

I'll try cc cleaner.

Otherwise. THANKS for your help. if you think of anythign else let me know.

My machine is running really Well. Theres just that weird issue with the Device manager crashing. And My external drive.
I'll test the external drive again on my Wife's computer. See if it works there.

Right now the External seems to be disconnecting/ stop working ( although the llights are still on) after a few minutes now. Its too bad.. its less than a year old...

No big issue! I have All the stuff backed up on Crashplan so maybe Buying a new drive and restoring the Data will do the trick.

THANKS

Last thought.
Download: TreeSize Portable Free Set your folder Options to show hidden files and Protected System files then right click to run as Admin.
Scan all your drives and take a look at folder: System Volume Information
On each drive to see how big they are. Clean them up also
On the external drive, open Admin command prompt and run: chkdsk /r X: where X is the drive letter of the external drive. It'll take a while to complete so just let it run.
If I think of anything else, I'll post back.

Cool Thanks. I just ran Treesize on all my drives. The only drive that has alot of stuff is the c drive.

-My system volume information is 8.7 gigs on the c drive. how do i Clean it up exactly? i can Delete all the content ???
- my pagefile.sys is 32 gigs big . should i worry about this?
- Theres also a 16.5 gig hiberfil.sys . should i worry about this too?

I'll check my external Drive HOWEVER that will be nearly impossible since it disconnects after several minutes...

THAnks for the tips.

SVI folder is where Windows store System Restore Points + Database Indexing etc... and will grow bigger. You can clean it by:
Win+X->System->Advanced system settings->System Protection. Hi lite C Drive->Configure->Delete and then create a new one.

Pagefile.sys is 32 GB because you have 32GB of RAM installed. And since you have 32 GB of RAM, chances this file will never get used. However, you'll need it in case your PC gets BSOD then this file will be used to create memory dump. I have 16GB in my PC and manually, I set it to 1GB.

Hiberfil.sys existed because you have hibernation set to on in your Power Options, you can turn it off then this file will be deleted by Windows on next reboot.

The problem with your external HD might be related to the Device Manager acting up due to outdated/corrupted USB driver, you might want to update this also.

I have 6 usb 3.0 plugs on my computer None of them are working with this external anymore. Which is ODD because it worked just fine for the last year or so... but inthe last week It keeps disconnecting after some time And and just REcently ( today) it wont stay hooked up for more than 30 -60 second. Seems odd that it would do this on all 6 usb 3.0 plugs all of a sudden... The ones on the back of the computer and the ones in Front arent working with this drive..

HOWEVER I just plugged the drive on a USB 2.0 port and It seems to be working! So I've been TRansfering The files to an empty internal Drive!!!! Its been running for 45 minutes so far soo which is good! SUPER slow though transfer though!

I already Updated the USB driver todays... How do you recommend I FIx the usb 3.0 drivers etc..

My motherboard is an Asus sabertooth x79 . The drivers for the motherboard / usb was updated earlier today soo I ruled it out.. Maybe I need to look at it again

You can try another USB3 cable to rule out that it's not the cause. FYI, external drive is not designed for constant use, it is convenient but if it's constanty plugged in and there's not much air flow inside the enclosure, will generate lots of heat and shorten the life of the HD. My MB is MSI MB, and they use the USB3 manufactured by Renesas, So when I first got the MB, I had to also update with the new firmware from Renesas for it to run properly.

By the way, are you using any kind of anti virus ? if you are, for testing purpose, temporarily uninstall it completely (You have to use the uninstaller from their website, not from Windows uninstaller).

Another useful piece of software is: CrystalDiskInfo6_3_2. Download and run to make sure that all of your HD's are in good health
