Solved problems making and booting from recovery flash drive

All system info is included at the left under system information. I am not experiencing problems with the tablet. I merely want to be prepared for an unbootable situation. I have made two attempts to create a bootable rescue disk: one with Macrium Reflect free Windows PE and one with Windows built in utility.

On both recovery drives I have attempted BIOS order set to boot from the flash drive and configured both with EUFI enabled and EUFI disabled. That amounts to six different boot configurations. I also attempted to use Windows recovery options by all six previously listed methods. The computer has failed to boot from the flash drive on all attempts.

On the drive created by Windows, I opened the files to view bootmgr in notepad. The file contained gibberish followed by a message at the end stating "BOOTMGR is corrupt. The system cannot boot." Unfortunately I erased the Macrium recovery flash drive before I thought of viewing bootmgr.

I have read some tutorials stating that the 32-bit OS cannot boot from a flash drive. I have found no Microsoft articles (technet, microsoft answers, microsoft KB, etc) stating restrictions for booting from a flash drive on 32- bit OS.

Thanks for your assistance.

I have a Toshiba Laptop with W8.0 64 bit. Both WinPE 4.0 and 5.0 worked for me when set up via Macrium v. 5 Free and Macrium v.6 Server. The only thing that comes to mind is perhaps you need to add some drivers to the WinPE image.

Other than this Laptop I've only owned Desktop PCs. So I'm no tablet expert.

Thanks for the reply, MilesAhead. I have resolved the problems.

Macrium free WinPE:
I neglected to check the file format on the flash drive before attempting to create the rescue disk. It was NTFS. Reformatting it in Fat32 solved the problem. I don't know why this is important, but it worked. Maybe one of the geeks can explain that to me. One way or the other, it boots and works now.

Windows recovery disk:
File format had nothing to do with the problem on that flash drive. It was already formatted in Fat32. Since installation disks no longer come with new computers, I decided to try something I have read: computer manufacturers will supply installation media upon request. A call to WinBook customer support revealed that Micro Center is the manufacturer of WinBook tablets. The CSR told me that the installation media is provided by the local store. All I had to do was supply the media. The local Micro Center store created an installation disk on my flash drive at no cost. It boots and works properly.

Glad you resolved it. Since the change to UEFI I am still at sea as to the various partition and file system types and what has to be what for USB Boot. MBR was a lot simpler. But it has been kludged as much as possible. The changes have to be in order to support huge media sizes etc..

I used to have about 5 OS multi-booting on 2 physical drives using Boot Magic and grub. It held together for years. Don't get me started. I still think cars should have points plugs condenser and a carburetor. :)

Yep, I remember competing in statewide slide rule contests. ... This is my first experience with both Windows 8 and touch screens. The learning curve is greatr than I expected. Normal user stuff isn't too bad. Getting under the hood and performing the more techie stuff can be frustrating at times. Windows 8 is no XP or 7.
