maybe someone else has this issue: all drivers on this asus notebook installed well with W8CP except, apparently, bits of a commonly-used Ricoh SD/memory reader device. I was able to get it partly done with ancient 64b vista driver but surely there's a better way.

some of the id's:
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_19C71043&REV_12
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_19C71043
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&CC_088000
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&CC_0880

\Device\NTPNP_PCI0025

PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&REV_12

any help would be greatly appreciated :thumb:

Yer a Genius.!
worked perfectly. No more bangs.

hey since we're on a roll....
this is asus x83vb-x2 model - both before and updating bios to latest, it has issue in that, despite bios settings to the contrary, it will:
- always boot from hard drive unless you disable it completely
- NEVER boot from usb-bus devices: not via usb port and/nor not from the sd card slot.
- it will boot optical

it feels like something is amiss in the drivers for usb? or pci? I downloaded chipset direct from intel since asus basically obsoletes things in a matter of weeks.... no upkeep. driver pack installed well, but no fly on those devices for boot. they do work ok otherwise, best I can tell.
also, maybe related, is the old sata nemesis... on this one nothing I have tried will allow win8 to utilize sata-mode. only ide mode. drivers are right, registry is right, but switchin at setup results in endless repair loop.
default consensus seems to be "reinstall". but I can live with it 'til january

many thanks:geek:

Hi

Download from HP sp37809.exe file and run it.

Very few machines will boot from the card slots, but not many.

If you are willing to try the Plop bootmanager, it can chainload USB and CD-Rom drives to boot from the Plop bootloader on some machines which have no native support for CD or USB boot in the BIOS, and no means to edit the bios features. - I have an Acer Travelmate 2420 that is configured like that, but boots fine from USB with the Plop Boot Manager installed.

The caveat is that if the bios has enabled features which do not work as they should, you may be on a progressive failure cycle, so at least maintain essential back-ups.

Plop - Documentation / Manual / Examples - Free Boot Manager, builtin usb driver, native usb, boot different operating systems, cdrom, usb, freeware, option rom bios

yep - just tried to boot a bootable tool utility burned onto SD in a Dell N4010 I am rebuilding - no worky in spite of the bios setting to the contrary.
Kudos to Lenovo: my daily-driver TPad x120e will. like a champ

to the Asus - the good news is that it runs well, is stable, no missing devices. the AMI BIOS is barely sufficient - I don't think they put a lot of effort into that one.
Its about to go off to a happy new home so I'm not putting any more cycles into it.
As weird as Windows 8 is, its a better alternative for that one vs. the originally-spec'd Vista
When the trial runs out somebody will need to save off the data and reload ugly vista.... or punt it.
