Just got a new laptop - the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 series with an i7 5500u, 8gb ram, and the radeon r7 m270

Trying to compile all the drivers for it so that I can remove the factory OS and install a clean 8.1 Pro and do all my system imaging and stuff for it. But I just cannot find the touchpad driver. It does not exist on Dell's driver page for this laptop (tried both the normal site and the FTP link given by someone on here in the OEM drivers thread)

So the next logical step I thought, still having the factory OS installed, just check device manager. And under "human interface devices" I see "HID compliant touch pad" and under the properties I see that its using the Microsoft default driver dated sometime in 2006 (!) ... Is it using the default driver because this touchpad is one of those ones engineered with the help of MS? Their "precision" touchpads I believe they are called. Either way it works brilliantly, really good sensitivity, muiltitouch, etc. I just want to make sure when I wipe out the factory install it will work likewise :p (I of course have taken an image of the factory drive before even booting the machine up for the first time so I can restore)

Screenshot of device manager attached...
Cheers

Since it is using a Microsoft driver now it should re-install just fine on its own.

Truthfully i believe as you see it now with microsoft drivers, it will work just fine when put Windows 8.1 on it. Be only a concern if this was a separate touchpad you added on to laptop, but as this is built into it, there is no brand drivers required for it.

Just make sure to check for updates on Dell's site for other device drivers for this laptop for Windows 8.1, 32 bit or 64bit whichever it is.

Om my ASUS laptop my touchpad works like a basic mouse with Windows default drivers. Point and click is about it. To get the two finger scroll to work and all the other gestures to work I have to install the ASUS Smart Gesture Utility. It's not listed under drivers on the ASUS site. It may be the same deal with Dell. Just a heads up, you may have been looking in the wrong section of their downloads. being a Dell it should have a Service Tag Number. Plug that number into the Dell site and it show everything for that specific model.

Yeah thats what I had done - no touchpad drivers on the Dell site. And using the factory install of 8.1 core there are no touchpad drivers installed, just the "Microsoft basic driver"

Although looking at your model on Dell here are these drivers you looked at, latest dated march 26 2015 although for mouse and keyboard. Right, nothing else shown for touchpad. Try to call Dell

Yeah I used to have last years model and it used Synaptics. I honestly doubt calling them will yield anything as (not to toot my own horn ;)) i'll probably know more than the person on the other end. Anyway thanks for the response. I think what i'll try and do is just see how it runs and if its running obviously bad i'll try and contact Dell via their Twitter, that has worked out for me in the past.
Cheers

Hey, i know what you mean when i call support always feel like i am teaching them a bit or two, having enough knowledge yourself, but won't hurt to call, twittering...not sure about that being any better. Your most welcome. Windows 8.1 still has it's issues as i have found out too.

Yeah agreed. Like i said if i run into issues when I stop being lazy and decide to clean install, I will contact them... As of right now i'm bored of windows (just spent the last few weeks learning sysprep and imaging and the like) and now decided to install Fedora...for fun...

Agreed, 8.1 has issues. IMO Win7 is a better OS, but I have gotten used to 8.1 and with update 1 it isn't bad at all i've found.

For a second thinking of a Hat, Fedora, lol. As never saw this yet. Having issue myself lately posted here i am stumped on, could be related to Windows 8.1 compatibility or an update which caused this. Good luck !

Yeah... The things techies do when they are bored: Quad-boot my system and try and learn Linux (i've never done much with it, and know basics of OS X, but I like Windows better than either of those) ;)

Cheers KYHI! I had known how to export the drivers but not how to import them to my WIM. Brilliant. Slightly related but kind of unrelated, due to this touchpad driver being native to Windows 8.1, I can't get my touchpad working properly under Win7. Even if I export the driver from the Win8.1 partition, then try and re-import it (using device manager) , it acts like it is installed , tells me to reboot, I do, and touchpad still doesn't work.
Driver version 6.3.9600 on Win8.1.1, even if I try and force import that driver to Win7 the version stays at 6.1.7600.

Tried generic synaptics drivers, those did nothing apart from making the sensitivity a little better, but still no multitouch or being able to click in the middle of the touchpad.

Not a huge deal as I am only installing Win7 for testing/curiosity to see how it runs on my new laptop. Just a sign that the times are changing.

And for those of you that do not have an install.wim, but do have a decrypted install.esd
Here is a program that will convert the .esd to .wim format

Reason being you can not MOUNT an install.esd file, you can only apply an install.esd file.. Because of this you can not prep your install.esd > it has to be a *.wim file
