Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

I have a need for an RS232 port probably PCI, but I see such a wide diversity of prices. Which should I choose? Some have a UART and some do not. Do I need a UART? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I'll be using it with ham radio software called Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and a ham radio transceiver Yaesu FT-950

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

Hi fireberd, I have 2 PCI slots and 1 PCIe. One of the PCI slots is presently occupied by a legacy modem port. My main concern is whether I should buy one of the PCI serial adapters that has a 16550 UART and which cost over $25.00, or one of the cheaper ones that cost less than $10.00. What will be the difference? 73, Jim

P.S. Get your license back. You are missing out on a lot of fun.

I would go with the UART model, but as I don't use that its just my take. The less expensive one may work for your application so its how much you want to spend. If you buy the less expensive model, get it somewhere that has a liberal return policy in case it doesn't work out.

I've considered getting back into ham radio, but at 77 I've got other things going. Beside everything locally seems to be VHF, I'm an old 20 meter SSB type.

The difference is without a UART, the processor must do all the work. I would recommend the UART model myself but as firebird says, see what others are using with that software.

Thanks fireberd and pbcopter, I did some research and found that most of the hams that use HRD have a USB/Serial cable and even though it is expensive I may go that way. Thanks for your help. 73, Jim W3FAW

I'm surprised they are using the USB/RS232C adapters. They are very iffy and I haven't found any that will work with Windows 8/8.1. My wife has a Singer Embroidery machine that uses RS232C to connect to a PC. I've only found one adapter that will work and it will only work in Windows 7, not Win 8/8.1.

You are much better off with the PCI com card.

Hi fireberd, There is one cable called the USB-63 made by R T Systems that will work on Windows 8. It costs $49.00 with drivers, but I checked eBay and one recently sold for $12.00. I'll keep looking on eBay till I find one. I searched the Yahoo FT-950 discussion group and this seems to be the most popular with that group. 73, Jim

That cable is a specialty cable for certain radios.

That is correct. It works with my Yaesu FT-950.
