using an old laptop lcd as a secondary monitor+webcam

ok so i have an old hp laptop which overheats and never works and has a broken hd, basicaly a piece of crap. the monitor works for it however, so i was wondering if i can use my current monitor along with the laptop's. ive disconnected it already and looking at it, it would fit perfectly to the right of my monitor if i was to place it sideways. so i was wondering if it was possible to make it do this? ive read some threads about this but they had no detail. its an hp laptop. this is the exact make

is there a chip that i need? or do i just connect the wires somewhere? i would like to do this project, and with your help im sure it will be possible. thanks :)

You would need to find the pinout diagram of the monitor and wire/splice it up so that it works by connecting it to your graphics card. For example, to a VGA connector.

Not terribly difficult but probably not worth the effort at all, imho.

I hear that...it's always cool to make projects work out. Do you have a picture to post of the current connector of the screen? Just curious what it looks like...

You would also have to rig a way for it to get power. That's easier said than done unless you have a power supply handy and know what you're doing with that too. (If pc power supply, you'd have to rig it to turn on without a motherboard attached by connecting green + black wires together.)

Then, you'd have to check that the monitor needs a +12v supply, like the psu delivers.

As Gman says, it's do-able, and not that difficult.

If you have the screen, the time and the knowledge to wire it up correctly, go for it.

It certainly can't hurt to give it a go.

Second picture gold-ish colored ones seem to be your wireless antenna's. I think the connector in the first picture is what passes the data to the screen and then some (LVDS connector is what it is called I think?). The leftover connector on your second picture.. no idea what that is, I didn't come across that on my Dell when I rebuilt that. Something to power the inverter?

perhaps thats for the webcam, which i also intend to use if possible, as my current monitor does not have one.

As my first post in this thread says: You'd need a pinout diagram for the monitor and also for the video card, telling you which wires do which function. Then, you'd need to cut the end off of the monitor cable and cut the end off of a vga cable too. Then you'd have to strip the ends of the wires with wire strippers or a pair of good scissors. Using the pinout diagrams, you'd then splice together the wires from the monitor and vga cable correctly by soldering together or just using your hands to twist the wires together. Obviously, solder is the better way to go about it. Then you can use electrical tape wrapped around each splice or in Radio Shack stores or similar, you can purchase rubberish splice covers that fit over the bare wire.

alright so how would i find out of the lcd can work with the psu?

Look on the monitor itself to see if it has any ratings like power consumption (watts) or anything saying V. If it is not 12v, you can not easily use a psu.

is this information critical? or can we try it anyway?


unfortunately i have no idea what those pinouts mean. i have a soldering iron and solder though, so maybe if you could explain it to me i would be able to do it. i could post pics, if it helps.

it was a nice laptop yes, but its just too damaged and i think it would cost more to fix than to repair. heres a list of whats broken
hard drive wont be recognized, motherboard overheats in 10 seconds, fan wont work, case broken in lots of places, screws missing, screen wont go back into the laptop because the things holding it in place are cracked, keyboard missing keys and wont work, touch pad wont work along with buttons, lights wont light up when they should, battery lasts for about a minuite and laptop wont boot up if not connected to charger AND battery. i honestly think that there is too much damage and i should salvage what i can. although, this is a little off topic, there are some VERY important text documents and pictures on the hard drive (this may sound very nerdy-beware!) they contain passwords usernames, and other information about accounts for various online games, and are worth well over $2000 in real life currency if i was to sell them on ebay and other sites. so id like to recover that info if possible. any ideas? i could use the money to buy a real monitor, or laptop. or even both.
