having trouble recovering data off drive

so i have an old hard drive from a windows 98 laptop. It is an IDE drive. I got a USB 2.0 ide drive enclosure. I put the drive in and plugged it into my PC. The hard drive is not showing up. When i go into computer manager to drives, the drive does not show up. Here is a screenshot: drive issue.png it is the lower drive.

Are you sure it's in working condition to start with. Does the enclosure have own power supply/adapter ? Can you feel it start up ? Some drives need to be set at CS (Cable Select) to work from USB enclosures.

If it has been sitting for a long time it may be suffering from "stiction". If the drive looks like it powers on but you can't hear it spinning up then this might be your problem.

The common fix is to power it off and "gently but firmly" whack it on a hard surface. Really. Do not take my word for it, here is a link:

i can hear it moving when i turn it on. It is an IDE drive and the light on the drive case turns on and i can hear it.

Isn't the drive "disk 1" in your screenshot?

If so, Windows is saying it's unformatted -- which is not good news.

To recover data off the drive, you need go consider using a Windows data recovery app. One free one is "recuva". The best one I've used is RecoveryMyFiles, which is free to download and try out -- to see what it finds -- but you have to buy a license to recover the actual files and folders.

You might have to locate somebody with a desktop currently running Windows 95-98SE as primary [not sure if VM mode will work], hook up this drive as Cable Select [Secondary] and see what happens. Windows Secrets Lounge even has a section dedicated to W95-98SE users. Wise Data Recovery is a freebie that might be able to help.

Try and use a Linux Live DVD and see if it sees the old drive. You would see the onboard drive, and Linux should mount the old drive as a portable drive. Sometimes you have to use a powered USB hub with some of these enclosures.
