Windows boots 3 out of 10 times on an SSD drive

I've just bought a crucial MX100 256gb and installed a Win 10 preview on it.

Whenever I tried to reboot it there were 2-3 failed attempts - It just stopped at the windows logo during boot, so the drive was detected but for some reason it wouldn't be read (the led indicating that the drive is in use was not blinking).
After 2-3 hard resets there would appear a message under windows logo saying something like "Automatic repair will begin now" and the pc would reboot correctly into windows.

So I thought, that's because of win 10. Installed win 8.1 and exactly the same situation happens.

My bios SATA settings are set to AHCI, there are no UEFI options as my laptop is ~5 years old. Installing AMD AHCI drivers didn't help.

What's more I've discovered that everytime I reboot my PC, the APM settings of my hard drive reset and are set to 01h instead of FEh and this causes write speed to be extremely low (50mb/s).


Now the interesting bits - that drive inserted into two other laptops that are also 4-5 years old booted into win8 every single time. The drive was directly switched between laptops, without any formatting or windows reinstalling.
Also windows 7 installed on that drive boots every time on my laptop, but I really want to move onto win 8 / 10...

Any suggestions ?

What does it matter ? Right now it's win 8.1... Even if I had win 7 on it right now I still would look for a solution to problems with win 8/10...

well once you figure out what OS version is on your disk - maybe someone can help you with your boot problem..

Dude are you serious ? I just said that RIGHT NOW IT'S WIN 8.1

If all of your 1000+ posts are of that quality then *facepalm*

I know this is going to sound "crazy", but maybe you have what I had -- a "bad" drive! I went through similar situation with a Kingston SSD. I used it to install Win10 TP and it had filesystem corruption nearly every day. I thought it was Win10TP, so I installed the same build to a spare hard drive and had no problems running that for two weeks. So, I wiped the SSD, imaged off the working Win10TP, migrated that to the Kingston, rebooted using the Kingston -- and started getting filesystem problems immediately!

I ran SSD Life and CrystalDiskInfo on the SSD, and even ran Kingstons own diags on the SSD -- and it checked out OK!

So, I swapped it out with an older Crucial SSD and have not had problems since.

You should see if you can get an RMA exchange for the SSD.

Well the file system doesn't seem like it's getting corrupted as the automatic repair does basically nothing but instantly asks me whether I would like to restart the PC.

As I said, the drive inserted into other laptops works correctly. If the drive was faulty then it probably wouldn't work anywhere I guess ?

Sysprep /generalize /shutdown

From what I read, this command prepares windows installation to be copied to other PC's and that's not what I'm looking for. I'm trying to make win 8 boot on a machine that it was originally installed on and not copy it onto other PC's.

Download and create windows 8.1 installation media - Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

When you get the partition screen, remove every partition and allow windows to install to the unallocated space..

This version of windows setup reads the embedded windows 8 and 8.1 product keys..
