Solved Installed RAM Not Correct

I have two identical HP Laptops, both HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv9700. One works and one is cratered; I brought the dead one home for parts, of course.

I checked the RAM in the working one and there are two sticks, 1 GB each, while the dead one had two sticks of 2 GB each, so I changed them out.

The working computer booted just fine, however when I checked the RAM, it shows only 3GB installed.

Is there anything I can check to see why this is?

Wynona, do you means it shows as "available" or "installed"? Also 32 or 64 bit Windows? Can you post a pic of Task Manager, the memory tab?

Update!!!

I also had an HP dv7 that cratered about a month ago. I checked the RAM in it and it's also the same, so I took out the RAM I had gotten from the first broken laptop. Snatched the RAM out of the dv7 (2 GB per stick), put it into this dv9700 and it works! I now see 4.00 GB RAM!:dinesh:

Before I changed the RAM the second time, I ran a test on RAM and it passed.

OMGracious! I just did a check on the other RAM with adequate lighting and the proper glasses! One stick is 2 GB and one is 1 GB!

Do I feel embarrassed or what!?!? Sorry for asking such a dumb question . . . Just assumed that if the first stick I looked at was 2 GB, the other one out of the same computer would be too. Sigh . . .

Is this using the correct RAM number, i find this for that Laptop (2x2GB) PC2-5300 . Recheck the BIOS possibly mapping part of RAM,something is disabled in RAM settings in BIOS. Try reseating them or one is bad maybe. As you had no way of knowing they worked correctly till put them in a working system, yes this 64bit HP system can handle up to 4GB.

As you saw, it was the glasses and lighting that needed checking, not the RAM numbers.

You didn't offend me at all. I admitted what I'd done wrong, which opened me up and let y'all in on it. It's great that we can laugh at our own mistakes and even encourage others to laugh at us too. That's what makes this forum so great.

I have so much respect for you admitting the mistake. So many nowadays think it is a sign of weakness but in my eyes it is just the opposite. None of us are perfect. Would have been very easy for you to act like things just suddenly started working right. Have no doubt some of that goes on here.

Anyway, once again, I can't count the times I've made similar mistakes. Have a great day! :)

Thanks, Popeye. Much appreciated.

Admitting what we did wrong can help others by alerting them to not "do that". Too, if they see that those of us that are "supposed" to be knowledgeable can do silly stuff, it gives them hope that they can get to guru status too. :busted:
