    BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER Crash

    Hey guys,

I've recently installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview x86 on my laptop (Asus M50SA).

Installation went fine, but after about 10 minutes of starting to use to the OS, I get a crash with a message telling me to look up the error 'BUGCODE_USB_ERROR', and a timer counting down to a restart. It's essentially an old-style BSOD, but slightly fancier and simplified.

This continues to happen over and over, usually giving me no more than 10 or 15 minutes. The crash doesn't happen while using any particular application and indeed happens even when I just boot it and don't touch it.

Any ideas? I'm writing this from my Windows 7 partition, but I can switch back to 8 for information gathering (although it usually crashes a few minutes in). I don't have this problem when using 7 on the same laptop, although it looks like that error and an associated blue screen has been around through Windows XP. There have been a variety of fixes associated with it since then, but I doubt many will work on Windows 8, since the majority seem to be hotfixes from Microsoft that are OS version specific.

It's almost certainly hardware specific, since this doesn't seem to be a widespread issue.
    Relevant hardware details:
    • Proc: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300
    • Memory: 4GB Unknown Manufacturer
    • Chipset: Intel PM965
    • Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
    • BIOS: American MegaTrends 204 8/5/2008

I'm using drivers supplied by Windows Update, since Asus doesn't even make Win7 drivers for this older laptop model much less Win8. The BIOS is the latest version supplied by ASUS.

Any help would be cool! I'm an IT professional, I can handle technical explanations, etc. Just figured I'd check the wider internet to see if anyone has encountered this issue yet.

    Hi,

Please run this tool by right clicking then select Run as Administrator. Zip the files it collects on the desktop, then attach here.

We'll sort this shortly, no problems.

    Windows 8 Log Collector

Alternatively, if you are on 7 now, just go into 8's \Windows\Minidump folder (you might have to Take Ownership first) - copy the files in there to any other folder, then zip them and attach that.

To make zip >>> Right click on highlighted files and/or folder and chose Send to>>Compressed folder.

(Notice my avatar. It is the inverse of the new bsod screen. Well, the smile part is anyhow. Btw, I don't do it for a living but really should heh - just a hobbyist that helps people out.)

Should be interesting indeed. Haven't seen this before on 8...I say no problems though!

    Howdy GMan,

thanks for the quick response. I've attached the zipped folder of logs to this post, see what you can make of them. I'm not seeing much there though. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Update that and you're good. Enjoy.

    ----------

For making the system even better after -

    should update this too:

    Code:
    0: kd> lmvm smserial
    start end module name
    91c3f000 91d4a900 smserial (deferred)

        Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
another good one to update (on Asus' site, it's usually ATK0110 driver but can sometimes also be found in "other" download section or similar):

    Code:
    0: kd> lmvm atkacpi
    start end module name
    919b2000 919ba000 ATKACPI (deferred)

        Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
Would also update Ricoh card reader driver, even if ASUS doesn't have it. Google does.

    Code:
    0: kd> lmvm rixdptsk
    start end module name
    918bf000 91910000 rixdptsk (deferred)
