Advice on RAM size for Gigabyte motherboard

Deciding whether to get new PC or put new hard drive in my PC - posted previously on problems- hard drive has crashed.
The guy who came to help me said to get more RAM - new hard drives and he would repair windows
Went to purchase RAM and showed the man my manual for my Gigabyte Ultra Durable TM3 MB GA-P55 -UD3P
Under Memory it says - 4 x 1.5DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16GB of system memory
This guy said - it will not take anymore than the 4gb of RAM that I already have installed - I could put more in but it would be not be available?
I found his accent difficult to understand.

I do not understand this if it says 16gb why can I not have 16gb?
I am basing my decision on whether to get a new PC on this as if I cannot increase to more than 4gb of RAM then its maybe time to update.
Very confused. Thanks for advising me.

Thank you for your reply - I presume you mean expand the tab on the memory on the PC - cannot do - C drive is corrupt- Is there a difference between the amount of RAM that you can install and what is available - I know I have seen on my system info 4gb of RAM 3.5 available. This guy yesterday was saying - yes you can put it in but only 4gb will be available. Makes no sense to this grey haired old lady who is struggling to make a decision.

I edited my post above. Do you have 32 or 64 bit Windows installed?

sorry its 32 bit - this guy yesterday was saying well if you update it will be 64 bit therefore the Windows 8 disc purchased 12 months ago will be no good and have to buy 64 bit one.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit - don't understand the x86 but I have seen that so presume this guy is actually correct....its 4gb.....SO my repair guy said for windows 8 i need more than 4gb ram and this guy said similar yesterday but he also thought I could put new hard drives in and keep it. Think I am leaning towards a new PC ....i have i5 and I don't really understand - do I keep to an i5 - or is there something better - on the price list he gave me it goes up to Intel Quad Core Zeon - but he highlighted the i5 but presume the processor speed is a lot faster than what I have.

I can't help but think the guy is trying to sell you something you don't need. The i5 is a good processor and you can install 64 bit from the same disc you have.

You don't need more than 4GB of memory on 8 depending what you are doing.

Can you post the exact make/model of your computer?

before i turned the PC off completely as cannot access C Drive I managed to print the system info from Accessories system information - cannot access Device Manager or anything like that.
Firstly - it was the PC repair guy who said I needed more than 4gb of ram for Windows 8 - and he was of the opinion that I could add to it.
The guy yesterday was also encouraging me to keep my system but said I could NOT add to the ram. He is happy to install my drives and load windows 8 for me.
So this is what I printed out.

System Model PFF-UD3R
X86-based PC
Intel(R) Core TM i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67 GHz, 2793 Mhz 4 Core (s) 4 Logical Prcessors
Memory 4g
Total physical memory 3.50 gb
Available memory 2.28 gb
Total Virtual Memory 7.00gb
available virtual memory 5.15gb
Is there anything else you need - not sure if this is what you require..

Thinking again as Popeye mentioned, guy trying sell you something else too, instead i feel right now need to fix the system first, hard drive, then can go back to if can get more RAM. System specs seem good enough. Again not sure the model number you were able to get was motherboard, if so i found this GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0)

We were basically looking for make and model of PC,not just the motherboard.Dell,ASUS,ETC.....
PFF-UD3R if this is system model, what brand name, could find it in documentation came with PC too ?

Guy at Computer place built the PC so I have the motherboard box with all the different packaging in. so I have the Intel Core i5 Processor book - got a much better graphics card - there is a small box with Where Speed Is G.Skill - not sure what that is - maybe the graphics card box and thats about it....sorry I can't give more info. Just rang the place where it was originally built and I can take it over tomorrow - they will try RAM and I may get them to put hard drives in if it does not cost too much labour and see how it goes. But that link I looked up said if its 32 bit it cannot go larger than 4gb....

Really a lot of confusions in statements made here by tech, for one Windows 8 comes with both disc's if buy full version,64bit and 32bit. Now is your hard disk bad, or does it have corrupted files, or bad sectors, which one can it be, not much said on this. This is your main problem, should be taking care of first, RAM should not be an issue for this problem at all, came this way,PC.

If can not do it yourself in anyway, by all means then take it back to ones who built it, if there is a guarantee. If you can,i would first run a chkdsk on this Hard Drive, if all is good, this drive is most likely good. Chances try a repair install or a Windows 8 refresh or reset to fix if files in windows are corrupted.

Margarethold, it sounds like you are not extremely knowledgeable when it comes to computer hardware and relying upon the person who originally sold you the computer. We just don't want you to be taken advantage of because of your lack of knowledge.

You should concentrate first on getting the hard drive working or replaced. Unless you simply want a new computer.

Ok - sorry had visitors - so just getting back to your replies - thank you I appreciate them. I have felt that hard drive was heading for a crash for a long time - have done repairs etc.. it would just take forever to shut down and crash on boot up - then it would be ok - then it would do it again.
Re knowledge - well most people are amazed at what I know and how I can find my way around a computer BUT compared with you people - NO I am probably not knowledgeable at all - tho I am familiar with the terminology - motherboard - ram, hard drives and have actually installed ram.

My main concern was that this computer is about six years old - I have to pay to have someone put the hard drives in and do a reinstall of Windows 8 - yes I am sure I have the 64 bit disc - will query that with the guy if I go back there - the guy who will do the work was the one saying I need more RAM and so was the guy yesterday - so I did not want to pay a lot to have new hard drives and then fine I still have a computer that needs more ram. Its in the car and taking it in to the place where it was originally made - tho unfortunately the guy who did the work is no longer there.
Will see what happens tomorrow and I thank you all for your replies.

I run a batch file to fix things. It works pretty good---

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
pause

********************************************************
I bought mine at Walmart for $400 or $500.
x64--500 GB--1.4 GHz.--slow but good for me. :)

Its in the car and taking it in to the place where it was originally made - tho unfortunately the guy who did the work is no longer there.
Will see what happens tomorrow and I thank you all for your replies.

Think about the cost of having it worked on compared to the price of a new one. Your old monitor should be OK. Unless you want a bigger one. I bought mine separate from my computer.

thank you - I did put all the information in earlier that I obtained from System Information.. and yes thats why I have been asking questions to weigh up the cost of having new hard drives installed etc compared with buying a new tower.....everything else is fine.. so I will wait and see what happens tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your advice.
