Hi,

Have difficulty to show my Toshiba V63700-A 500gb external HD plugged in the USB 2s of my motherboard.

Saw this below in Amazon (£9.99) but does not mention Win8 only w7, has anybody by chance used it in w8?

Also my mobo has 2 free PCIE slots, will I need anything else with them or just plug into them & + power cable?.

The seller did not answer my Q. .....thanx ......nick

If you need more USB ports. Get a laptop cooler with a built in USB hub.

I bought 3 different cards before I found one to work with windows 8. This is the one that finally worked. Plugable PCI Express to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 2-Port Expansion Card. I don't know if this is still available or not. Probably has been replaced by a newer one. I had to get a Molex to SATA cable. The one I ordered was too short, and had to get an extension.

Thanx Clint,

I'll have a look at yours. What motherboard do you have & how old is it please?
It seems a real hustle to get USB3 on a usb2 mobo. What on earth is this "Molex to SATA cable"? I wonder if I'll need one too. ...nick

PS. I googled Molex connectors & they look like the cables coming out of my PC's Power unit. Would it convert USB2 to USB 3?

I even bought a split cable, 2 going to 2 USB ports & the 3rd to the external HD but, still no luck.

The strange thing is that I plugged the external HD in my old micky-mouse ACER small netbook & it works OK???

I have a Dell motherboard. It’s about 3 or 4 years old. As I understand it, If you have a USB device that requires a lot of power and doesn’t have a separate power supply, you need power from the PC to the device. That’s what the Molex adapter cable is for. I guess they make them backward compatible for the old motherboards that have the Molex power connectors. If your power supply has Molex connectors, you don't need the adapter cable. Some cards don't have a connector for the cable.
