MTP driver apparently OK but not in explorer

Hi, I recently changed to Win 8.1 (x64) and for some reason the OS is not recognizing my phone or my tablet (both have MTP interface).

Apparently the drivers (MTP & ADB) are correctly installed, I see both of them on the device manager with no errors, and I can even connect through ADB. Also, in the devices and printers site I see them under the unspecified type. I also see them on the safely remove menu (but the icon is a generic device, not a multimedia one).

I've tried countless solutions, and also all types of drivers. Sometimes I get error 10, sometimes nothing.

I've read one solution that is to install the media feature pack for N versions of Windows but that's not my version. But then I remembered that I messed up with the system codecs not long ago. Maybe there is a connection?

Anyway, I can't explorer any android device through MTP.

Any solution or approach to find the error?

I will provide any info you guys need.

Thx in advance!

EDIT

Apart for MTP and ADB devices in device manager, I have a hidden device under "other devices" category with the name of the phone (GT-I9300 in this case). That's the name that should be seen on the explorer to access the phone's files.

I'll try and tell you. But for now, just so you know I have MTP enabled on the phone. I have tried with MTP enable, MTP+ADB, PTP and also with nothing at all. As for the driver advice, I haven't tried that program but I have uninstalled all the devices and rebooted several times with no luck What I get is MTP code 10, but not all the time, only sometimes. I've also installed google adb driver, samsung drivers... a lot of stuff by now.

Update log: still no luck, everything went as before, device apparently installed on device manager (this time ADB device correct, MTP error code 10, and samsung modem OK) but nothing on the explorer.

My PC is newly-installed, I don't want to format again!!

I really appreciate your help, but is not only my SGS3 the one that fails, is any android device of my house. So will that guide fix the others too?

Not necessarily. Many devices require different drivers and getting one device to work may break another. One of the downfalls of Android.

Did you read the last post in the link I gave?

PS: It is best to use different USB ports for different devices to possibly get them working and continue to work. If you mess up and plug the wrong device into the wrong port it can screw everything up again.

I'm on it right now. So your telling me seriously that the latest Microsoft OS is not only unable to detect an android phone, but more than once at the same time?!?!?

That's madness! On Win7 I only had to unplug any phone any time!

I suspect there's something more here than just the obvious. Maybe I messed up with the system, as I said, but I can't install the feature pack on this version of Windows.

What we really need here is a good system, so we can discover where the bug is, or what is precisely missing, or whatever.

I'll read the link for now and tell you my results.

MS doesn't go out of their way to support Android compatibility. Basically up to knowledgeable people like those at XDA Developers to come up with fixes. The reason 7 works so well is because many more years of developing the interface to Android devices.

I never tried it but if you have old 7, Vista or XP discs you could create a VM and see if it works better. Could also go dual boot just for Android stuff. Nice thing about VM though is you can get the media files already on the host.

I'm still doing the procedures from the link you gave me. I will continue tomorrow. But I can tell you now, I have another 8.1 computer that does work (how do we explain that), and also, I've tried before the instructions of the links (I found them in other posts, basically that's all the info there is out there).

And still, in the case my phone would work, what about my tablet or other phones? I still think there's something weird with the OS...

Thank you nevertheless, I'll keep trying and keep you informed :)

I finished, absolutely nothing has worked for me, not even the response at the bottom. Again, in device manager the device is there and correctly installed (in appearance), but for some reason the phone is not showing on the explorer.

OK, weirdest thing ever, my dad's phone IS recognized, but not mine or my tablet. Why is that? My phone hasn't changed from win7 to 8.1!

Should I try safe mode?

Problem solved. Guess what was the cause: the Media Scanner Optimizer Xposed module. Don't know why though. But at least my phone & tablet are recognized again.

Thanks for all your support :)
