Can't burn on to DVD-R disks

I have a strange problem where I can write to DVD-RW disks but not to DVD-R disks. I used to be able to do both with the hardware I'm using (Liteon Ihas 524). Any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix this?

Also, what software are you using to burn, Windows built-in burner? Try different software. There are some free burner programs to test with.

This one is good: https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

Hope it's not a laser issue. Are you saying one writes to DVD-R and the other to DVD-RW?

I used the Windows 8 program, Imgburn, and Cyberlink Pro producer. I have used the latter to burn DVD-Rs before. I haven't burned a DVD since my hard drive went down last year. Could it be possible that the recorder wasn't installed right? (My friend installed it for me.)

Just tested imgburn with DVD-RW and that definitely works. Only the DVD-R doesn't work. Same with Pro producer.

CDburner Xp claims the DVD-R is not useable either because it's of poor quality or incompatible with the drive. My computer can definitely read the old DVD-Rs I made with this very drive, just not write to any new DVD-R disks. I've tried different DVD-Rs, Verbatim, TDK and another. Nothing works.

Don't know your brand of DVD burner, but I had similar problems a while back -- would handle DVD-RWs just fine, but not DVD-Rs.

I swapped out the DVD burner for around $20 and have not had the problem since.
