RAW as USB but NTFS as SATA

My 3TB toshiba suddenly turned RAW from NTFS today out of nowhere. Drive letter is still there, but when I click on it, it asks me to format. HD does not seem to be failing and it fairly new (5 months). So I decided to hook it up to SATA, and all of sudden everything works perfectly again. I'm using about 2/3 of the drives total capacity. It's almost as if once that 2/3 mark was hit, USB stopped recognizing the drive.

Could this be an issue with USB with larger drives? Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Thanks,

It could be because of USB, on some cutoff size is at 2.2 TB.

Any HDD can become defective whether it's 1 day old or 5 month old. The problem might be:
  1. HDD has some bad sectors and will get worse.
  2. Too hot inside the enclosure. IMHO, the external USB HDD is not designed for constant use and there's no room to dissipate heat once it becomes real hot.
  3. The USB interface is gone bad.

Try:
  1. Download CrystalDiskInfo5_6_2Shizuku.zip. Unzip and run to check the disk status
  2. From Admin command prompt, run: chkdsk /r X: where X: is the drive letter of the HDD.
Since this is a 3TB HDD, it will take a long time to complete, hours and sometimes appears to be stalled so be patient.
  3. While you still can access the HD. Back up your data to another HD.
  4. If still under warranty, I would ask for RMA. I had this happened to me with a 3TB WD. Fortunately I bought from COSCO and returned it after one year with no question asked.
