Hello my friends. I'm looking to possibly buy a Surface Pro 2 as a laptop replacement and the features may beat buying a laptop with my current budget. I'm concerned about hardware limitations however. Could I buy say this Microsoft Surface 2 32GB 10.6" Tablet Windows RT 8.1 (Certified Refurbished) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9ERISQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_x6JKub1N3G2FK and install regular Windows 8.1 64-bit on it? As I understand it, Windows RT doesn't have a desktop environment which is why I want to install regular Windows 8.1 64-bit on it. Is this possible? I'm not too familiar with the Surface Pro's hardware configs.

Surface 2 has an ARM processor while the pro 2 has an x86-64 processor. Think of ARM and x86-64 as the way a CPU understands/process information (note this is not the correct definition but this is only in layman's terms). Windows 8.1 is coded for x86 while RT is coded for ARM thus you can't install a x86 operating system on an ARM CPU equipped Surface 2.

Yeah I knew the software limitations of RT. I just needed clarification on the hardware. Thanks. So I guess I'm in the market for a Surface Pro 2...

They're pretty cheap for the specs at least here in USA. Go with the 256 GB model so you won't have to worry about space, but then again you can always extend with a micro sd. It'll be slower though than the internal SSD of the surface pro 2 in case you opted for the lesser 128 or 64 GB model.

Unfortunately the prices of those things contradict their use. You get more functionally out of a standard laptop at those price points.

Hey everybody I went with Amazon.com : Acer E1-571-6442 Intel Core i3-3110M 4GB 500GB 16-inch Windows 8 Black Laptop : Laptop Computers : Computers & Accessories because I can afford it for starters. I have the most experience with Acer laptops as they build some pretty decent laptops for what they charge. Their light gaming lines are always on point with what you get for your money. In my experience, other manufacturers over charge for lower tier machines with their laptops. Hp is cool but, I feel they charge for looks which is cool but, not when you're on a budget. Asus gets a nod but, I didn't find any Amazon in my budget with desired features. What do you guys think? I'm marking this as solved but, hopefully others can benefit from it and maybe others can offer some input :)

That should be sufficient for everyday tasks without slowing down. Also, in case you want faster WiFi and more capacity/speed drive access, you can always upgrade the WiFi to 802.11ac and the HDD to SSD although SSD upgrade costs a lot.

This is the SSD I currently have Kingston Digital 240GB SSDNow V300 SATA 3 2.5 (7mm height) with Adapter Solid State Drive SV300S37A/240G https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A1ZTZNM/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_-K4Kub1G47NJC & that's with the current hp I have with the Core 2 Duo T6666 @ 2.2. That laptop has SATA 3 Gb/s This Acer I'm getting has SATA 6 Gb/s so, no more bottlenecks; full theoretical throughput FTW That SSD flies on this hp so, I can't wait until this Acer gets here. I have two other Acer laptops with a i5 and i7 chips that I loaned out that I'll be getting back next year so, I'll have a full collection :p

I am going to upgrade the Wi-Fi card in all of them when I get an ac router ;)
