My friend's fairly new computer has started showing an unknown device in Device Manager. The hardware id in properties shows USB\VID-08B1&PID_0018&REV_1501 I've tried to find this on the PCI Database website but have been unsuccessful, as has a Google search. Any ideas how to find out what this device is? Thanks

Most likely something that he is plugging into his computer USB port. Try this tool. USB.org - Tools

Which tool on that page are you referring to? They are a number of tools there, although none of them seem to say they can identify USB devices. Thanks

It could be a Fingerprint Sensor driver.

That's a good idea. But I just tried that and it returns.

I've also tried letting Windows search for the driver, that does not work.

BTW When the device id shows USB as the first three letters, does that imply that it is an external USB device?

The reason I am looking at drivers in the first place is that there is an odd graphics display issue going on and I wanted to see if the latest drivers are installed. Seeing this unknown device got me wondering if it may have anything to do with the display. There is an AMD video driver installed, but I've seen some computers lately with two video drivers installed. Is that only laptops that do that to save power, or could that also be the case on this desktop? The HP website shows AMD, Intel, and nvidia graphics drivers for this model.

If this device is not a display adapter, then I'd just as soon ignore this for now.
