First off, are there 64-bit drivers for Windows 8.1 for this printer? If not, that's essentially game over for your whole idea. You may need to check the printer manufacturer's website for an updated driver. Then assuming that the printer is physically connected to the Win 7 machine and the idea is to try and share it over a LAN, the most effective means I've found for doing this is to first make sure the printer is shared on the host machine. Then from the client computer, go to the main network share listing of the host computer -- where you see all the shared folders and printers. Right click on the printer and select the "Install" option. From there you'll need to manually point Windows to where you extracted the 8.1 driver files for the printer. Windows will do its thing and then you can print using a shared printer.

However, the major drawback to this method is that both the printer and Windows 7 computer will need to be turned on for the 8.1 computer to print. You're probably better off getting either a print server or a printer that can directly connect to a LAN. Which has the added benefit of decoupling the printer from the computer, so you can put the printer more or less anywhere you want, as long as there's a means for it to connect to the LAN.

Install the driver. Each computer needs the drivers installed, even if the printer is being hosted on another machine and then shared. That said, the better solution is to connect the printer to the "network" via Ethernet or wireless using the printer's own networking capability, using a print server device, or using a router with print server capabilities built in.

With the printer networked, no sharing needs to be enabled - and that is MUCH better for security. Also, no "host" computer needs to be booted up and running for others to print, and the printer can be physically located in a central place and not take up space on your desk.

We need to know where we are starting from first - so what is the brand and model number of the printer and brand and model of your router (assuming you have a router).

As far as procedures, it really could not be easier with W8.1. Once the printer is connected to your network, you tell W8.x to "Add a printer" and it automatically searches your computer and your network and lists all printers found - including the networked printer. You select that, and Windows does the rest. This assumes W8 knows your printer, and it knows many.

W7 is not as easy, but not hard either. As for XP, you need to get rid of XP, or at least isolate it from the Internet. It is not safe and you risk infecting your other systems by keeping XP computers on your network and with Internet access.

I don't see any checkmark on a device showing it has been set as the default printer. So try right-clicking on the printer and checking Set as default printer and see what happens.

Sorry, but I don't understand. Regardless if W7 or W8, there needs to be a default printer device. The default printer will have a green check mark next to it.
