Hi all,
I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 last week. Today I decided to update my Cardreader drivers for Windows 8.1 using the Dell Service Tag recommended Realtek Cardreader drivers. It said it had installed correctly ands shows in Programs and features in Control Panel. When I look in Device Manager under Disk Drives the four drives still show as generic. There have never been any errors listed against them but I installed the drivers and nothing seems to have been updated. I checked in Properties/Events for each of the disk drives and nothing is listed as being changed either. Also nothing is noted as installed either in the Reliability History either..Im now baffled. Is this normal behaviour?
It works OK but I cant understand why they are listed as generic in Device Manager. I don't want to risk going to Realtek site..thats why I downloaded the Realtek Cardreader drivers listed for my PC from the Dell site

When you update your device drivers do you always do it from update driver software in device manager.. or do you just download and run the file from a folder? Does it make any difference?
Actually it just depends on whether the driver file has only an inf or if it also has a setup installer. This particular driver has a setup.exe so I used that. Sometimes if I have a problem I may try it through Device Manager with the inf.
