Importing a keyboard cover

Hi, i recently purchased a Surface Pro 3. I had the option of buying a keyboard cover, but they would only discount it to $20 cheaper, so i declined with the intention of buying one online for a better price. It seems that in Australia, the red keyboard is also not available, which is the one i want. Before i buy, i was hoping someone more knowledgeable than i could answer, if a foreign keyboard would be compatible? Thank you.

So i contacted Microsoft today. I'm a little skepticle that the lady actually understood my question; but assuming she did and gave me the correct answer, apparently an imported keyboard cover will work. I'll buy one and then update this for others.

Please do. I'm going to buy a SP3 in the UK and want to buy the keyboard in France because I want that layout. I'm pretty sure it will work but confirmation would be good.

Some pondering, based on logics:
  • Any computer regardless of its OS can be used in any of the languages said OS supports. In case of Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 you can select from over 130 languages, not counting different variations of the same language (for instance EN-US, EN-UK, EN-AU and so on)
  • Surface is a normal computer with Windows 8 RT, which can be used in exactly as many languages than other Windows 8 computers
  • Any input language can be used with any physical keyboard, as for instance me typing this in English using a Finnish keyboard layout (input language) on a laptop with a physical German QWERTZ keyboard

Therefore: any physical keyboard available to a specific Surface model can be used on any similar Surface devices and be configured to use any of the valid and available keyboard layouts. Would be totally illogical that if the user has Windows user accounts in several languages as for instance I have on my Windows computers user accounts using English, Finnish, Swedish and German, I would need to buy 4 different physical keyboards, one for each language. Of course not; living in Germany, I get German QWERTZ keyboards buying computers here and change the layout I use regarding my own needs, although I could as well order my physical keyboards from my native Finland.

Thanks for your in depth reply Kari. my concern isn't so much about the key layout. My concern is with hardware incompatibility that may exist between countries.

It's just a cover / keyboard without any AC/DC inputs. It will work.

It's OK to try to find out things you are not sure about, nothing against that :).

A DVD or Blu-Ray movie has its region code, it's true. But a Surface tablet is identical anywhere it is sold, so is the cover / keyboard (except that the physical keys are placed differently in various language versions). I mean, it's like an external USB drive in the way that it can be connected to any device which has the correct slot; every Surface has standard slots where you connect an equally standard external device, the cover.
