I just rebooted and nothing changed. I can see in file manager but the option to format is greyed out. I just tried something under properties and it said access denied. The drive was in another computer that had a bad motherboard. Could it be the permission problem.

What model of router is it that you have? What is the mfg & model of the external USB drive you are using? It is a router setting issue. Not a permission on the computer issue.

When you have USB storage connected to the Router, doesn't it control the device. Since you need to go through the Router to set up access, it may not be able to format a drive.

I suppose you could plug the drive into a computer to format it, then plug it back into the Router to see if it works. I have a user manual for a Linksys E3000 router but it makes no mention of formatting a connected drive.
