Windows 8.1 won't open flash drive...

Yet another lovely problem with 8.1. When I plug in my drive, it shows up in with all of my other drives, and when I double click it to open it, the explorer window freezes, and doesn't unfreeze until I unplug the flash drive. I don't know what went wrong. This is a new problem that just came out of nowhere, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue, and if they know of a solution. Maybe it is a driver issue? I am positive that the drive is fine, because it works on my laptop, and even works on this computer in a linux virtual machine. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi MattB3692,
Okay these steps could help you:
_Try to change the port is the same thing happening?
_Search for "Device Manager" and expand the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" one do you see and exclamation marks in yellow?
_Can you scan the usb fash drive it may have infected files or virus.
Post back your results.

There is no exclamation mark in Device Manager. When I plug it in, it connects to the computer, and then it disconnects about a minute later, then reconnects. When it reconnects, it shows up in Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descripter Request Failed)". Very odd. Should I try deactivating my anti-virus, and opening it? I am sure that it is clean of any infections. I'm not sure if that could be interfering or not.
EDIT: There is an exclamation mark next to the message. I didn't notice it. Still, there is no option to scan it, and it's not listed in "Computer" as a removable device.

Unless I am doing something wrong, that "INFCACHE" file that he is talking about doesn't exist on my computer.

I you wish, you can try:
  1. Disconnect all USB devices except mouse and keyboard & turn off any anti virus software.
  2. Open the registry and goto: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\InfInst
and check the Version. The latest should be 10.0.13
  3. If not 10.0.13 then download & install: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20775&lang=eng&ProdId=816
  4. Also, download, right click and run as Administrator:Drive Tools for Windows Cleanup . This will cleanup any orphan devices in your PC.
  5. Reboot the PC & Connect your USB device to see if it fixes the problem

Hey all. Thank you for all of the help, but the flash drive is no longer working on my laptop, or in the virtual machine on my computer. So I have come to the conclusion that the flash drive is corrupted. All of my USB devices are working fine, so this must be the issue. Thanks again. Maybe this thread can help someone else in some way.

Yes. I bought a new flash drive today, and it is working fine. Luckily I have backups of what was on the old drive.
