Hello
Does anyone know if the Nokia Lumia Icon can be updated to 8.1 yet?
I do not want to buy it unless I know and I have been to At+T Verizon and called each. I also have used the web for information. I still cannot get a definitive answer. I could not get through to Nokia or Verizon tech support.
Thank you
Peter

P.S. For those interested, I just spoke to tech at Verizon who said other than developers[they void warranty] the 8.1 date was the 3rd than the 6th and now it is indefinite. He advised waiting at least a week for the probable date of the release and then some time to see how all is working out.

I got a free update to 8.1 about a week ago. I'm in the U.K. though! (Nokia Lumia 1520)

    Touchscreen,
Are you a developer or previewer with your warranty voided or are you a consumer who made the regular purchase?
How do you, like it?
What do you think of Cortana?
If you have a 5 MP camera, does it live up to a good reputation?
I cannot wait for the ICON - the camera is 22 MP.
I just have to decide on my carrier. Sprint was lagging for a while but is surging at this time. Verizon and ATT are the two top runners.
Who is the carrier you chose in the UK?
Good for you and enjoy.

I'm a consumer who bought it outright. Maybe you didn't notice Peter2 but I have a Nokia Lumia 1520. I just love it, especially the camera which has 20mp. I don't have a phone carrier. I intend to use this just as a small tablet which fits in my pocket just nicely. I don't know anything about the Icon, but for me the 1520 is the tops'!

So you can access the web with your home network for free or use Wi FI, or no web at all?
I read about your phone and it reads great.
To get the update you must have been online, right.

You can check the Lumia Cyan (8.1) update availability in North America here: Availability in North America - Nokia.

At the moment it looks that in US only AT&T has it available to all Lumia phones except Lumia 810 (Cyan update for AT&T Lumia 810 "under testing" which means it will be available soon), all other providers in USA show the update status as "under testing".

For other continents, to see the availability of Cyan update for Lumia, see this page and select your continent: Software update for Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8 - Nokia

Peter2, I use my own Wi- Fi network at home, to access the internet, etc., and Wi-Fi is accessible in most places I visit when I go to town. So I don't need a telephone carrier. I use a small "Mickey mouse" mobile/cell phone for phone calls on a "pay as you go" system.

So if you buy a phone, you can get internet on your home network and wi fi and others houses who will let you use their key. Don't you have to have some carrier to make calls and text? Or are you saying you use the smart phone in your network and wifi but have another less costly phone for texts and calls therefore no carrier. Don't you have to activate the smart phone?
I appreciate this information and look forward to more..

I got the update for my Lumia 520 a couple of weeks ago, I'm in the UK, the only thing I can't get with the update at present is Cortana which it seems is only available in the US at present.

I'm just a consumer not a developer and my phone is only the entry level phone but there were no problems with the update. It told me there was an update and it came in 2 parts, you had to install the first before getting the 2nd. Everything went without a hitch, there were a few restarts while it did its job but I now have Cyan installed with all it's new features, apart from Cortana.

I'm happy I love my Lumia. :D

My wife and I have the Icon and love them. Took an Alaskan cruise and took photo's and videos with them and they came out great. I have Verizon for my service but 99% of time they are running on my Wi-Fi for data. This is my first "smart" phone and I am impressed with the Icon. No 8.1 yet and another update after that has been released to development. The cell carries are slow on releasing the updates because they have to support their customers.

Hi there. You can use any W8/8.1 or other OS smart phone without a SIM card to use as a mini tablet. You can pick up WiFi for internet connection, use navigation, use IE, and even make calls via a web service such as Skype. You will need to stay with WiFi connection to make calls. Not sure, but it may need to have internet connection for navigation to get the route directions, but after that it uses the GPS while traveling.

Not intended to mock you in any way, but we/most Americans are ignorant to this kind of stuff, for we're somewhat brainwashed into thinking we need a carrier to use a smart phone without one. A dumb phone for carrier data connection for calls and texts, yes, but not a smart phone.

The more information the better. I am in the states and 8.1 is available only to previewers and developers.
I will go to the store when 8.1 is available to the public as preinstalled not an update.
I am still trying to figure the best $ way to do this. I know the new phones pick up Wi-Fi much better. There are a lot of considerations like contract vs. non, amount of data, buying the phone outright and just using Wi-Fi but I do not know if the phone has to be activated and how. is a carrier necessary?
I have a pay as you go phone for calls and texts but no data unless home or at a hot spot..
It is easy to just go to a carrier and take out a plan for like 2 GB but by the time they add up taxes, fees, insurance, activation, you are in the $100. plus range for only 2 GB data.

Confused.

As far as I can see, all Windows phones now sold will have 8.1 preinstalled.

We’ve been over the “buying outright” vs “contract” in the other thread and you understand the savings purchasing outright, correct?

Phones are not activated per say. Not like a Windows PC OS nor the OS on the phone. There may be a carrier’s activation fee involved where they enter the SIM card information into their system so to use the phone on their network. I had no activation fee with my AT&T prepay plan. Don’t remember if the SIM card cost me anything. If it did, it was like $20.

Now I just saw that since we can legally unlock our devices here in the U.S., which sparks competition for lower prices, AT&T and perhaps others are giving away free SIM cards with no activation fee, but requires a new 2-yr wireless agreement with data (min $14.99/mo.) or Mobile Share (min $30/mo.) plan. See the fine print at the bottom of this page:

BYOP - Bring Your Own Phone or Tablet to AT&T and Save

I have a pay as you go phone for calls and texts but no data unless home or at a hot spot. It is easy to just go to a carrier and take out a plan for like 2 GB but by the time they add up taxes, fees, insurance, activation, you are in the $100. plus range for only 2 GB data.

2 GBs of data is a lot of data. On average, I only use roughly 300 to 400 MBs on average per month, but I live around a big city where there’s hotspots just about everywhere at most restaurants, stores, and bars. The phone will usually switch to the hotspot, but it’s a good habit to check the icons just in case. I don’t stream movies, videos, and avoid sites with a lot of pictures while on data. I’ll wait to get on a WiFi hotspot.

I bought my AT&T-branded Nokia Lumia 1520 outright during a pre-Christmas MS online Store special, went to the local AT&T brick & mortar store here in town (one can set up an appointment on their online site, which is nice), told them I wanted the $40/mo prepay plan ($43.60 w/ tax), obtained the SIM card, they installed it into the phone, activated it, and I was on my way in 20 minutes as a happy camper. :D The AT&T $40 prepay plan gets me 500 minutes of call time, unlimited text in various countries, and 500 MBs of data. More than adequate for me. The $25 plan would not be enough.

You may want to try other carrier's sites, but here’s AT&T’s:

GoPhone plans

You can press any of the carrier’s for a no contract phone here:

Windows Phone For AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, & Verizon - Microsoft Store

There are numerous other carriers you can find with a Bing search.

I have been to ATT and Verizon but each time I look at "about" the phone says 8. I would like 8.1 preinstalled
I am learning and trying to ingest all of this.
The fact that these new phones pick up WI FI so well is a real plus.
I live near DC in MD so there are many hotspots where I can save data.
Does 1GB data(I surf a lot), getting insurance, and unclosing taxes come out under $100 month?
I know I should not splurge but I have my eyes on the Icon for the storage, the pixels, Cortana and other features.
I think I would pay ATT $199 for the phone with a 2 year contract which I believe is broken.

To be honest I have to read this thread over a lot as it is very confusing.
We all want the most for the least amount of $ but I am trying to be realistic. There appear to be a lot of new wrinkles coming out every week and T- Mobile is causing some waves. Sprint seems to be making a come back also.

In another week I think I too will make an appointment and sit down with both a Verizon tech and an ATT tech to see who sounds better to me. By then maybe I can put a preinstalled 8.1 Icon in my hand.

Thank you all for the learning experience; I am elderly and ill but am quite savvy with the pc. This smart phone is a good challenge for me but I am going to be sure to do my homework.
