USB not working

Its really simple, none of my USB ports are working, at all. I dont get any message or any feedback there is a device plugged in. It happened randomly, and its not working for months now.

Now, I was wondering if there is any way to try to fix that OTHER than un/reinstalling the whole OS because I wasnt the one who installed mine, or have any idea how its done :(

I have Windows 8 (not 8.1.), I dont know if thats of any use, I just saw people write that in their posts.

Are your USB Controller devices showing any yellow exclamation marks and are the drivers up to date. Any unrecognized devices?

I never updated/installed the drivers myself, but the last time they have been updated was around a year ago, if that helps.
And no unrecognized devices.

If it is the drivers, I dont know how to update them :/

You can try running this program: DriveCleanup - remove nonpresent drives from the registry

It's a little over halfway down the page.

Download it to your Downloads folder then unzip it and run DriveCleanup.exe. It will open a Command Prompt window then do it's thing. Close the window when it's done then reboot and see if that helped. If not I'd suggest taking it to a reputable Computer Repair Shop.

I already have a program called Driver Sweeper installed, but it only gives me the option to "Analyse and clean" the drivers, and not to install the newer ones, obviously, but my problem is that I dont know how to install new ones or where to find them.

Also, would leaving the old drivers and installing new ones cause problems?

Hi, I've got the Problem with Windows 8.1 (Update 1). I've never had any problems, but after an update i installed a week ago i can't use ANY USB device anymore. I can't even login, because neither my mouse nor keyboard is being recognized. Is there any way to fix this via the registry? Can i list the last installed updates via the computer recovery somehow? I really don't want to reinstall everything.

If it is the drivers, I dont know how to update them :/

1. Hold down your Windows Key and push X at the same time > choose 'Device Manager'
2. At the very bottom of the list should be "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" > expand the list and see if there are any yellow warning symbols next to them.
3. Make sure you don't have any of these warning icons anywhere in this list, regardless of USB, as the problem could be with the motherboard and/or chipset drivers as well.
4. Report back here what you found.

That is strange ... you should have an item called Universal Serial Bus Controllers at the bottom of the list, which can be expanded to see if any listings are in yellow

There should be a "Universal Serial Bus controllers" entry but I see its missing for you. One thing I would do is power down your PC and unplug the power supply from the wall. Now press and hold the case power button for 5 seconds to completely drain the power supply. While the power is off I would reset the BIOS to defaults with the jumper. If that makes you nervous and you don't want to do it, plug the PC back into the wall outlet and boot up into the BIOS. Then make sure the USB ports are enabled. Then save settings and reboot into windows. USB ports have a overload protection circuit built into them. They will shut down to prevent damage. I've never seen them all stop working but I have had to drain my power supply to reset the circuit in the past when I lost one port.

To be honest, Ive entered BIOS maybe 3 times total, so I wouldnt do it alone unless theres a super detailed guide on what to do or the thing itself is easy and newbie friendly. I really have no experience here.

Drive Cleanup is totally different than Driver Sweep. Please give Drive Cleanup a try.

If it doesn't help, open a Elevated Command Prompt:

Click on the Start button and type cmd.
DO NOT press Enter or click Go.
Look at the upper part of the window and you will see cmd.exe.
Right click on it and select Run as Administrator.

Next, type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and press Enter.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open Device Manager.
Click on View then Show hidden devices.

Post a screen shot as you did before.

If Ztruker's advice doesn't help, I think you need to do what Alphanumeric already suggested; given the fact that the hardware controllers are not showing up at all, it sounds like they were disabled in BIOS somehow. Here's what to do:

1. From the right side of your screen in the Start (tile) menu, choose Settings, then Change PC Settings.
2. From the General tab on the left, under Advanced Startup, choose Restart Now.
3. Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then UEFI Firmware settings, Restart button

Fish around in the BIOS options for USB controllers and make sure they aren't disabled. If the setting happens to be greyed out, and won't let you change it, you might have to "Load Setup Defaults" (as Alphanumeric explained above). If you do find the USB Controllers setting and enable it, be sure you "Save BIOS settings and Exit" before you in fact exit BIOS. Make sure you are thorough in your search, as it might be in a Sub-menu, or "Advanced" menu.

Let us know how it goes.

If you can't find anything at all, report back here what make and model machine you are using, and when exactly this started happening? Is this a new computer? Did you just upgrade, or install the operating system? Did you install/update anything right before you noticed the problem?

I decided to try with the BIOS settings before the Driver Sweep, it just seemed like its faster than installing/trying/unistalling. Im not sure where was I supposed to look for it, but if it helps, I took a few photos.
