Keyboard and mouse not working

I have the same thing as Tinyman...no keyboard or mouse by attempting to add safe mode with networking. What is UEFI?
Where do I find this USB viewable option as I am connected by USB?

I went to set up (F2 at boot) > and then searched around for anything that relates to USB and found that USB is enabled and on high speed. Hope that is not it and I am missing something, because I still have no mouse or keyboard.

Keyboard and mouse are the ones that came with the Dell XPS 7100 system.

I'll try different USB ports and report back...didn't make a difference.

What am I missing? (except for my mouse and keyboard...lol)

how do I get to that? I have no keyboard or mouse. I'm using my laptop to communicate/post...desktop is unit i'm struggling with.
Go F2 or F12?

greatly appreciate the assist!

as a note, this was a new drive I just installed win8pro on via retail disk. Assuming BIOS chipset not UEFI.

You could do that from within Windows until step 4. Be sure to try a different USB 2.0 port on the back of the computer to see if that may help.

no change on trying different ports...can't get into windows (or off the goofy space needle screen if I let it boot all the way)

its going to have to be a change made thru F2 or via F12

I am trying to get to repair via the install disk or system restore...but the dvd drive runs extremely slow to load. It took several hours to install...not sure why...maybe the A03 2012 dated bios?

only have about 45 more minutes to tinker with this issue until after work this evening.

What's preventing you from getting into Windows?

Do you have another keyboard and mouse that you could use to test with instead? Perhaps from a friend.

I think I still have an old wireless keyboard, but even if I do and put in new batteries...it still connects via a usb port. Would that prove fruitful or a waste of time?

It depends on if there's anything wrong with your USB ports, or something wrong with your old keyboard and mouse.

Testing with the other keyboard will at least help narrow it down.

In addition, be sure to use the USB ports that are directly on the motherboard at the back of the computer case, and not any from any type of USB hub. When you try a different USB port, you'll need to restart the PC for it to recognize the connected keyboard.

same issue with the wireless...no keyboard or mouse controls.
I did notice that the mouse was working on screen while the install disk was still loading. (I had a screen displaying a solid color with the mouse being movable, but the setup screen had yet to display)

when I went upstairs to check on the install disk load progress, the wired mouse was working. The setup screen had not finished loading yet, but the mouse was working.

I shut the system down, installed the wireless keyboard and mouse and booted up...loads but no mouse or keyboard.

Ok on the move to here since off topic from tutorial

I will have to restart the desktop and boot from the install disk again...it will take quite some time...more than I have for this session. But, if that is the route you recommend, I will get it started.

If I recall, once setup loads, it gives you the option to install or repair(in the bottom left corner). I did create a restore point successfully before I started the safemode addition effort.

appreciate that Brink...it may be after 7 or 8 pm EST before I get back to this issue. Once setup loads and I have the option to "repair", should I go ahead and see if I can get to my restore point or do you have another method in mind by going to "install" and letting that go?

would you recommend I update the BIOS from the A03 2012 to something newer after this issue is resolved or just leave well enough alone? system looked like it was functioning fine prior to attempting the safe mode with networking effort.

have replaced the memory board battery; loaded memory defaults and saved; install of win 8 Pro is painfully slow...WAY too slow. Takes over 10 min just to load splash screen.
The restore point would be easier. :)

ok...this desktop system is my bain right now. It had been down for over a month starting with a 2000-0146 error and win 7. I finally got around to working on it after the new drive arrived. Just got it back on line yesterday and last night was in the process of moving my saved files over to the new drive. Figured I would hold off on that process and get safe mode on board in case something happened...just didn't figure on this issue! lol...

gotta run for now...type at cha later...hopefully with good news on restore point put to good use and successful.
