On my laptop, an error showed up suddenly last morning. It said something along the lines of this "Your computer's Hard Drive is failing". In more details it was my Western Digital drive, labeled at C:/. I instantly shut it off. It is a NE model laptop. Any ideas why?

Can you lead me to a screenshot of a S.M.A.R.T error ?

[DEL]Did not find any screen shots, sorry.[/DEL] Typical SMART error messages listed here:

Hard Drive Failure Errors: Imminent Failure, Smart, BIOHD, HD535, etc | HP® Support

Common SMART errors are:

Hard disk failure is imminent.
A hard drive in the system reports that it may fail.
Smart failure imminent, back up your data
Error 1720 Imminent Hard Drive Failure
HP Hardware Diagnostic errors that start with HD521

The use of SMART does not prevent all hard drive failures, but it can give you the opportunity to back up your personal files and replace the hard drive before it fails.

Okay, just found

Sorry, that doesn't match the error screen I have. I rememeber it as this: It was in the desktop GUI, and it had 2 options "Backup your data" and "Ask me later". The title of it was "Microsoft Windows" and it had at the bottom "More details" , When I clicked it displayed the hard drive name, and the location of the drive.

That's all I could find. If you get it again, take a picture with a digital camera then upload it here if you want.

I dont know how I have this account but here it is. I also don't know who's it is but it's me. Also the specs are wrong. I guess this is for my other build.

That is pretty definite. I suggest you do as it says and do an immediate backup (image backup using Macrium Reflect Free is a good choice) then buy a new hard drive. Once you have the new drive, clone the old to the new then get rid of the old one.

If you have a install DVD then use it to install to the new hard drive once it's installed. If not, install the new hard drive as a slave or on a higher SATA port number then clone the old drive to the new one. Remove the old drive, move the new drive to the SATA port the old drive was connected to then boot. It should come right up.

You can use something like a USB to SATA/IDE Hard drive connector to connect the drive from your sister to the laptop at the same time the old drive is still installed in the laptop.

The use Macrium to clone the old drive to the new drive. Swap drives and youy done.

No way to tell.Depends on how bad the disk is. From what you've described it should clone okay.

Only way to know is to do it.

Can you boot it? Does it currently work. If so then it has not died yet. Replace and clone as soon as possible and don't use it any more than absolutely necessary.

Im sure it can boot. I havent booted it up yet in like 3 days? Still waiting for the SATA to USB. But I was just wondering how to detect if it's failed and died.

Like I said, if it boots it isn't dead yet. Hopefully it will boot and run long enough for you to complete the clone operation.

Good luck.
