USB Mouse works only after restart

Recently I bought a new lap top and installed Windows 8.1

I have an issue with the Mouse/s. I tried 2 different mouses and I encountered the same problem with both of them, so I know it's not a mouse problem. Note that both of these mouses work perfectly on my other/older/Windows 7 and previously Windows XP lap top, so it's not a mouse issue. It's either a driver problem or something else.

I have tried all 3 USB ports I got and it does the same thing.

When I turn on the lap top, if the mouse is plugged or unplugged and I plug it afterwards, it doesn't work. If however I turn on the lap top, plug in the mouse, and the restart the lap top, when it restarts the mouse works fine all up until the lap top is turned off again. And then to get it to work again I have to turn on the lap top, with the mouse plugged, or plug the mouse after it's turned on, then restart the lap top, and then the mouse works fine.

Apparently, this is not very convenient. It's a major inconvenience.

What can I do to try and resolve this?

p.s I never had this issue before on any other PC computer or lap top, whether it was Windows XP or Windows 7. So it's either a Windows 8.1 issue or the new lap top issue, or a driver issue.

Thanks :)

Oh, the touchpad works perfectly. It always works and I can turn it on and off with no problems.

I just thought I'd mention it...

Well, I just restarted my lap top to confirm, and as I said, the mouse is working now...

And now even if I unplug it and then replug it into a different USB port, it still works.

Also I've noticed that now that the mouse works, the lap top makes a noise when I remove and plug the mouse into a USB port. The same noise it makes when any USB is connected or disconnected to/from it, like an external USB or an external hard disc etc... But when the mouse isn't working then the lap top doesn't make any noise when i plug/unplug the mouse, as if it doesn't recognize it...

I found on some forum that disabling xHCI mode in BIOS may fix the problem.

I disabled it and when the lap top restarted it automatically installed the optical mouse device. It took it a few minutes and it did something, installing optical mouse device.

The mouse works now, but the mouse was plugged in basically after the restart, so it works like it worked up until now, after a restart, that is...

I will Shut Down the lap top, unplug the mouse, and leave it for a minute, and then turn it on again. I hope it's fixed.

I'll report in a few minutes...

Haha well that seems to have done the trick. The mouse now works properly. :D

However, now I wonder whether disabling the xHCI mode will create any other problems?

I just did a search to see what xHCI mode is, and the only issue I can see disabling this will create is this:

  • Disabled - USB 3.0 ports behave as USB 2.0 ports.
  • Enabled - USB 3.0 ports behave as USB 3.0 ports.

So basically my USB ports will be slower from now on. I feel that that's an acceptable trade-off for having functional USB ports which will accept an external mouse at any time. Because the touchpad is one of the worst things man has ever created, in my opinion...

I just hope no other issues arise due to disabling the xHCI mode.

Well, that's the end of this. I hope someone who is in the same boat as me and is thinking of reinstalling the drivers or doing an OS reinstallation gets helped by this thread; it only takes a minute to disable the xHCI mode in BIOS and fix the issue. :)

Thanks Jimbo.

I tested it again, turned off the lap top, left it off while having breakfast, turned it on again, plugged the mouse, it works. Then I tried the other USB ports, still works perfectly. :)
