Laptop freezes when transferring files between partitions

Hi all,

For the life of me I cannot figure this out. Whenever I start moving files between partitions on my laptop (Asus K61-IC) it will start moving the file but after it has transferred part of the file the whole computer will freeze and the only thing I can do, is force a hard reset by holding down the power button. If anyone knows of a way on how to fix this, please let me know, any help is appreciated. I have tried doing an upgrade of the OS thinking it was a problem with Windows 7 but it is doing it with 8.1 also. I am about to see if it does it when transferring files to my external hard drive and if it doesn't I'm going to back everything and if anything, format the whole hard drive to one partition and then maybe it won't do it anymore. I really am at a loss here.

Hi John, kinda sounds like a communication, buffer memory or hdd problem. I would start by doing a memory and hard drive check. Run the memory test in Control Panel Administrative Tools. Then run a chkdsk fix, it will take awhile for large drives but well worth it.

Thanks Popeye, going to give that a try now.

Edit: Ran memory test, it come back without any errors (standard test, 2 passes). Bout to run chkdsk now.

Ran a memory test and chkdsk (via command prompt and also via right clicking on properties in computer) and no errors were found. I'm really stumped by this.

You ran the chkdsk in offline mode where it reboots into the command screen to run and you did it for both partitions?

I guess I didn't. How do I do that with Windows 8? I did it from command prompt within Windows and then from the properties of each partition in My Computer.

Open an elevated (administrator) command screen and type chkdsk /f and enter. Should get a replay saying do you want to run it on the next reboot. Answer yes, then reboot. Will have to do it for each partition. Going to take awhile.

Thanks. Yeah that is where I messed up the first time, I ran it as an Administrator but I typed in chkdsk /f c:, then chkdsk /f d:, and finally chkdsk /f e:.

Ok I just ran chkdsk /f, rebooted and it got to 68% scanning the c: partition and it rebooted and after the reboot it was suddenly at 100%. But running chkdsk /f and rebooting didn't seem to scan the d: or e: partitions.

John, run it from within each partition for that partition. Make sure the command prompt shows the partition you are running chkdsk on.

Popeye, I think I've got it fixed. I want to thank you for all your help. I have EaseUS Partition Master installed and I ended up using that to check each partition with and if any errors were found it automatically launched chkdsk to fix them. So far everything seems to be working fine. Thank you again for all your help.

Well, never thought about using Partition Master but glad you got it fixed. :)
