Optical mouse wigs out while gaming - any advice?

I have a Gigabyte GM-Force M7 optical gaming mouse that occasionally has a mind of it's own. About every 5 minutes or so while gaming (never in any other context) it begins to move on it's own and the right/left buttons sometimes go off. This usually lasts for about 10 to 15 seconds (or until I unplug it). The computer I'm using is Acer Aspire V5-572PG. So far I have tried:

- Unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in.
- Using a different USB port.
- Using a different mouse (also optical; works fine on another windows 8 computer).
- Re-installing the driver.

Probably unrelated but my webcam also doesn't work despite re-installing the driver. I may have to reset my computer to factory default at this rate.

If it's working in "normal" programs I would suspect the game it gives troubles. What kind of mouse pad are you using ? I found out that ordinary piece of cardboard of natural color works best despite all those fancy-shmancy mouse pads.

I'm using cardboard, funnily enough. I haven't gotten around to buying a mouse pad because it works fine.
It occurs in every game I play through Steam. I contacted Steam Support and they said they don't handle problems with input devices. So I'm still at a loss as to what to do. I also did a factory reset in the hopes that it would fix my mouse and my webcam, but no such luck.

If your using a non-gaming mouse for non-gaming activities (I mean is you use the gaming mouse only for gaming) I suggest before you load up your game, you remove the regular mouse then plug-in the gaming mouse. From my experience playing Dota 2 (which is Steam game) is that when I started the game first then remove the regular mouse then plug-in the gaming mouse or had both mouse plugged in while playing, the mouse would have a "mind on its own" and go to one corner randomly and stay there for a long time until I unplugged or waited on it.

The gaming mouse is the only one I use. I'm getting into Dota 2 right now actually but I only pay with bots or my boyfriend because of all this. Pretty frustrating.

Try different surfaces where your mouse sits on

Maybe unrelated but Windows 8.1 introduced changes that affect the mouse in some games. A fix exists for that : Mouse pointer stutters or freezes when you play certain games in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2
Unfortunately it only applies to a select few games, for the others it can be remedied with Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (NoDTToDITMouseBatch compatibility fix) : Download Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8.1 Update from Official Microsoft Download Center or by a MS Fix-it : http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9844530

If it were the surface he would notice it immediately not after 10 min.

How old is this mouse OP? Might be dying. Also do other USB devices work properly?
