Performance differences with RAID versus Storage Spaces

On my Win 8.1 Test PC, I had Storage Spaces set up and this was my performance...


I then setup a 3 disk RAID6 array using the same hard drives and an Intel RS2BL080 RAID card...



Does this look right?

I'm not sure how you could configure a 3 disk RAID 6 array. RAID 6 requires a minimum of 4 drives.

Are you sure you didn't set up RAID 5?

I agree, I thought that RAID 6 required 4 drives, but I have 3 x 500GB drives attached and I thought i was setting up RAID 5, which would have given me n-1 drives (1.5TB -500GB = 1TB), but when the RAID was initialized and configured, I had 500GB of available disk (n-2) and the label said "RAID 6", so I'm a little confused by that. If you've ever used Intel's RAID tools, you agree with me that they were taking some hallucinogenic drugs at the time they were developing it... I'll look at it again later this week when I have some free time.

Well, "if" the Intel tools let you set this up, you end up with only 1 spindle for data and 2 other spindles that are doing nothing more than calculating parity. It's not much of a RAID. The point of RAID is partially to get better performance and space by using multiple spindles for data, and then provide some redundancy to protect against a single hard drive failure.

This is what the RAID BIOS shows....

So, 3 500GB hard drives, but the RAID setup indicates "RAID6" with available disk of 500GB. How can I have RAID 6 with only three hard drives? I thought RAID5 would require three drives and I tried to configure that and it indicates RAID 6 instead...

Raid 5 would have provided 1tb of disk space, 2 spindles at 500gb each, with 1 parity drive.

Raid 6 does double parity and provides for double disk failure, but in your case with 3 drives your DATA all goes on 1 spindle and it double calculates parity on the other 2 drives. So, not really much of a raid...Just 1 spindle. Might as well run a raid 0 mirror, it would save you the penalty of calculating parity.

Yep! I'm going to rebuild the array today and see what happens. I was just experimenting with this card as it was in a PC that ran video rendering at church and caused numerous issues with the PC. After we replaced the card, we had no further issues, so I believe the card is faulty. It's far out of warranty, so I'll probably pitch it soon...

I rebuilt the RAID array as a RAID 0 and ran this benchmark... 3 x 500GB Samsung drives...
