Hello,

I recently installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my desktop only to find my ethernet controller is not working..

Initially when i had windows 7 installed, I had Realtek Ethernet controller (RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC).But now when I try to reinstall it, it would not install and shows up an error code 10 (device cannot start). I posted this question on microsoft an...swer but i got no reply..3 people needed this answer.

I've tried running the setup in compatibility mode for Windows 7 but it doesnt work.

Secondly, I tried disabling and re-enabling the adapter which also didn't work.

Thirdly,I tried to install other Ethernet Drivers, But again didn't work.

Fourth i tried to install the drivers in safe mode with networking but nothing happened.

Please suggest me what should i do because I'm not able to activate Windows nor I am able to surf Internet.Include links if necessary.

Yes I tried installing these drivers, about 2 of them namely

Win7 driver v6.111

Vista v6.110.

But nothing happens.A yellow exclamation mark icon appears on ethernect controller icon in Device Manager.I tried to troubleshoot with the native troubleshooter but it says "device is experiencing driver problem."

On Device Properties, it says "The Device cannot start error code 10".

Please suggest what should I do??

I have this exact same 8139 working very well on 8.

Here is the driver x86 attached. Install using the Device Manager. Capture.JPG

First thing you guys will want to try is updating the motherboard bios to newest, from the manufacturer's site.

When this is done, go into the bios settings and disable everything at all that is not being used. For example, serial or parallel ports, game ports, firewire ports etc....

If I think of anything else, I be sure to post about it. I just woke up and not thinking clearly yet.

I find this somewhat strange. The file I attached has an .inf date of 9/17/2009 and the driver itself is 6.111.0723.2009

What you can do now is simply this:

Extract the download I gave you again to a folder.

Copy the .sys directly over the one at C:\Windows\System32\drivers

Copy the .inf directly over the one at C:\Windows\Inf

Copy the .dll directly over the one at C:\Windows\System32

And finally, copy .cat directly over the one at C:\Windows\System32

Reboot when done and see how it is.

I tried that and still does not work ...
It is something like the windows 8 for Windows 7 does this problem occur.
I do a BIOS update to see if it works.

Thanks GMan!

It is the correct driver for you or it would not have installed at all.

The reason I say that is because I am still curious about the hardware ids involved here. In Device Manager, you can right click on it. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to say hardware ids. Copy/paste results here.

Very welcome.

Bios update has a very decent chance of success.

And it does seem like the driver is installed well for you guys, but it is just not starting well at all for some reason.

Did you check to see if your bios is updated to latest? I would also double-check that it is set well and enabled in the bios after an update or now if it is already up to date.

One other question: Did you attempt to or actually install any 3rd party firewalls?

You can also try this too - Open an elevated command prompt. Elevated means to Run it as Administrator.

To do that, type cmd in the Metro Start screen. Right click on the app that shows and choose Run as Administrator.

In the command screen, copy/paste this then press enter to see if it starts:

Code:
net start RTL8023XP

This is 100% the same driver in every way, that I gave before. This version has an automatic installer though, so you might try to see if it does well or not.

Something else I thought of is to be sure you're installing with Administrator privilges. That could be the reason it has been failing for you guys.

Extract it to a folder then run setup.exe:

I previously also asked if there were any firewalls on the system but did not receive an answer about it.

If you have any type of Symantec software installed, this is the issue. In this case, use the special tool found online to remove it in safe mode.

Well, something very promising for you just happened here. Let me explain and then offer a possible solution.

I just set up a very old machine on Windows 8 and everything is well. My audio was not working at all. Windows Update offered and installed a driver for it which was the Realtek AC '97. Nothing I could do would get it to work after this driver installed.

I even installed my own copy of the AC '97 driver based on what happened, after. So I looked into it a little more on HP's website. Turns out that not only does this machine not have Realtek audio, but the driver that Microsoft installed somehow, someway, changed hardware ids and everything. I kid you not!

Do you want to guess what error code I was getting in the device manager? Yes - error code 10.

I downloaded the XP driver and installed in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP and as admin. It really is a SoundMax driver. Working wonderfully now!

The moral of the story? Check your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's website to find out exactly which ethernet you have. If they have a driver for it, install as I did.

My guess is that you have some VIA ethernet.

heh

Microsoft - if someone like me is having an issue, this really needs to be looked into....I need a job....wanna hire? :)

(P.S. Windows Update is still trying to give me the Realtek audio driver. I had to hide the update so it won't show any longer.)
