USB2 Error 43 on Windows 8.1

Since upgrading to Windows 8.1, something weird has been happening. Each time I plug in a USB2 device into the USB3 port on my Asus T100 tablet/laptop (Atom processor, 2Gb RAM and 32Gb SSD), it fails to recognise the device and then throws an Error 43 and complains that the device did not provide a suitable descriptor.

Initially I thought it was a Hardware issue. USB3 devices in the same USB port worked correctly, so I figured it might be bent contacts. However, adding a USB3 hub with USB3 devices chained from it worked, but USB2 still did not work. I therefore suspect a configuration or driver issue, but I cannot figure out how to fix it. The following link seems to cover it

How to Fix Windows 8.1 USB Code 43 Error

but I cannot figure out exactly what the fix is.

I have tried ever "re-install" style reset of Windows. It doesn't have any restore points to reset to.... so any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

This may be a driver issue.

In Device Manager, expand the Universal Serial Bus Controller and uninstall all the drivers, one by one if need be.

Reboot the system and Windows will scan automatically for hardware changes and reinstall hopefully the right the drivers.

Thanks for the reply.

I have three options.

  • Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)
  • USB Composite Device
  • USB Root Hub (xHCI)

I uninstalled USB Root Hub first. That removed all three. Rebooted, USB drive still does not work.

I uninstalled "Intel (R)..." and it removed all three. Rebooted. Still didn't work.

I uninstalled USB Composite device.... then the other two, one after the other. Rebooted, still no joy.

Tried "updating" the drivers too. Selected "search automatically" and it takes about 2 seconds to say there is no better driver. Somehow I don't think it is really looking that hard.

Any way to force a driver update check on Windows Update?

Thank you for the reply.

kb2917929 was already installed. Have gone and installed all of the optional updates just in case. Same problem... And I checked the USB drive on a different machine, so it's not that.

Which device are you trying to plug in or is it all USB2 devices?

It's any USB2 device. The one I am using for testing is a Kingston 16Gb USB thumb drive, DT160, but an old Lexar firefly doesn't work, nor does a Sidewinder game pad or a wireless keyboard/trackpad device.

If I recall correctly, the BIOS has two options, XHCI and EHCI. It is set to XHCI (was the default) and I changed it to EHCI to try to fix it. After this, USB3 stopped working.

I tried each of the options for re-installing windows before posting the thread in a hope I would get back to Windows 8 and working USB.

I tried "Refresh your PC without affecting your files". Then I tried "Remove Everything and Reinstall windows". After each I ended up with Windows 8.1 and broken USB2.

However, looking at the link you posted it says

If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and updated to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh Windows, it will restore Windows 8. Afterwards, you will need to update to Windows 8.1 via the Store again.

This sounds much more promising. I gave "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" a poke and it complained that it needed another 5Gb of storage space, so maybe I never tried it, although it didn't warn me that I would need to re-install Windows 8.1.

I am away for a few days, so will have to wait til I get back to try this again.

It was all up to date before I nuked it the first time. BIOS is up to date. Re-running the other ASUS updates now, which includes Intel chipset and Broadcom drivers. I have only KB2919355 from Windows Update left to install, which is a 430Mb update. Hope that will fix it tbh....

Are you using a cable to plug in your USB device, if so is it a USB2 cable?

Is a thumb drive. Plugs straight into the side, no cable used. Tried it with a cable. Still didn't work. I have a few USB devices strewn around the room, so gave them a go.

-- Works fine --
USB3 WD My Passport drive (by USB3 cable)
USB3 WD My Passport Ultra Drive (by USB3 cable)
USB3 WD Essentials (it's unlabelled) (by USB3 cable)

-- Does not work --
USB2 Kingston DT160 Thumbdrive
USB2 Unbranded HDD caddy (by USB male to male cable)
USB2 Logitech MX1000 Mouse
USB2 Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500
USB2 Samsung My Story 2Tb desktop drive (by Mini USB cable)
USB2 Samsung S4 (any mode) (by micro USB cable)
USB2 Three Mifi dongle (by micro USB cable)
USB2 Asus Transformer (by Asus specific cable)
USB2 Lexar Firefly thumb drive

-- Not even recognised --
USB MS Sidewinder joypad

I am sure I can dig more devices out of a cupboard if you want me to try them.

Other than resetting your BIOS settings to Default I am unable to assist you further. Someone else on this forum may have the answer.
Perhaps would be an idea to post your problem in the Asus T100 forums.

Please advise us if you have found the solution.

Okies. Thank you for all your time and effort. I will reset the BIOS (tried just about everything else). [Edit] Still didn't fix it :( [/edit]

If I figure it out, I will come back.

Cavey,

Not sure If you figured it out yet seeing it has been a year. Hopefully this will help someone else. I have seen many solutions online, but my solution is for the same symptoms you were having, these are the steps.

I just clicked on both of the sub titles under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"

On the top tabs, there is a label "Power Management" check the first box saying " Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Uncheck on the usb port under.

Hope this helps,

God BLess

Andrew
