"repairing disk errors"

Hey guys, sorry to bug y'all, but I'm having a bit of trouble with my Asus Vivobook. It was running fine last night, but today it was a bit slow to respond. I eventually restarted it and it told me I have disk problems. Now I'm stuck on a black screen with the Asus logo that reads "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete."

It's been this way for multiple hours now. I'm going to leave it overnight and hope it repairs, but, if it doesn't, is there anyway to recover my files? I have some important stuff backed up online, but I haven't backed up in a bit over a month and I don't want to lose my files. Most forums tell me to reinstall Windows 8? Would that make me lose my files, though, and how can I do that if I can't get past this error page?

by the sounds of that you have an input ,output error on your hard drive. is it really slow to boot up? if it is that if you want to keep your files and such clone the disk if your disk does have i/o error you will possibly need to send it to somebody to fix see if you can back up your files to the internet

Not necessarily disk problem, just possible file system errors.

if you want to back up your file, may be you can boot from mini xp or mini seven (from usb flashdisk) and backup your files. Then reinstal your os. But, if still not succes you can using mini tool (offcourse you running this aplication on another pc and your hdd must be connect with usb) and search the lost partition.

I don't know how much stuff you have for backup on that disk and if it is partitioned at all. Did it ever finish those "repairs yet ? How important is the stuff you have on it ? If it's really important you should have backup of it anyway. In that case Don't do anything with it, get another one with USB connection first. We'll help you further to save what can be saved if that HDD is not complete writeoff.
Which kind of computer do you have there, desktop, laptop ?

One thing I don't understand is with Windows 8/8.1 , the AUTOCHK Initiation Countdown Time is set to 1 second by default, that is not enough time for anybody to hit a key to bypass chkdsk. To check for countdown time, from elevated command prompt just type: chkntfs /T . I always change it to at least 10 seconds ie. Type: chkntfs /T:10.

Having said that, I think we can use the Macrium Rescue disk from one of our member's onedrive (WHS): Macrium WinPE .iso - OneDrive since it is built with WinPE4 and it supports both Legacy and UEFI. So using other tool such as Mini XP mentioned above might not work if your new laptop is installed using UEFI which I think it is.

  1. Use Winrar or Winzip, Extract the iso file to the root folder of a USB Stick.
  2. Connect an external HD, and plug in the USB Stick that you create in step 1
  3. Using the function key (Whatever it is for your Laptop Model, you need to find out from the User Manual) to display the boot menu. There will be 2 entries for your USB Stick on the list, one is for legacy, the other for UEFI, select correct one to boot from.
  4. Once booted, it will look like the screen shot below and follow what I suggest in step 1 and 2:

    2014-05-22_21-35-32.png
  5. With your data saved to the external HD, now you can do repair, re-install or whatever you wish.

EDIT: After step 4 above. You can minimize all the windows and open up the command prompt on the bottom left, from there you can run a chkdsk on drive C: as follows:
chkdsk c: /f
to see if it can do a quick fix. With /f option, it can run a lot faster than /r which I believe was run from the ASUS screen and it would take a long time to complete.

Good Luck !!! ;)

I would not recommend doing any repairs until all important data is salvaged and backed up. Any writing to the disk can overwrite it and make it next to impossible to retrieve. Now it's only up to that data importance of how to proceed. I would beg, borrow or buy a usb disk, make a Linux live USB boot disk and attempt to rescue as much data as possible.
Haven't tried this "Mini Tool Power Data Recovery" :Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks But judging by it's features, it has Damaged Partition data recovery and Lost Partition recovery, unfortunately it has to be run from windows.
Out of this one :Download HDD Scan and Restoration Program - MajorGeeks a bootable rescue CD can be made and run out of it.
There's many more free or semi professional tools out there but at this time I would rather advise OP to take it to a pro to do it if his data is so important.

That's exactly what I suggested and since Macrium Rescue Disk is created with Windows 8 PE and does support both legacy and EUFI then you can use it to backup your data to an external drive within Windows environment instead of using Linux live Boot disk. Please read what I put in red on the screen shot. Obviously the disk is corrupted but it does not mean it can't be read. In addition, I only advise to run chkdsk after the fact that the data has been backed up.
