Scanners need a Twain driver in most cases. The manufacturers usually have a generic driver that is minus all the other stuff. You could also try to force a generic driver through Device Manager.

As far as getting rid of junk in the registry, only option is a registry cleaner that you will be using at your own risk. I trust CCleaner myself but again, use at your own risk.

Run whatever HP uninstaller is available then CCleaner. You are saying you have an HP multi-function printer right?

If you don't want to use the entire HP driver package there may be the possibility to extract just the scanner driver from the package and install it. Some packages will allow an extraction program like 7z to unpack specific portions and some won't. The only other option I can think of is to allow the HP driver package to go through the extraction process then stop installation. Find the extracted files and install just the scanner drivers.

No matter what though I think you are stuck with trying to make the HP scanner driver work before Windows will even recognize it.

Not sure I was much help but glad you got it working. You should be able to remove those duplicate printers unless you don't want to take the chance of messing things up.
