Windows 8.1 (x64) Printer Queue Clears Before Printing

Hello,

I have a HP Deskjet 1515 which I just purchased 4 days ago. When I attempt to print anything from specific programs (more on this) nothing happens. I can see that the print job enters the print queue but it immediately disappears. There is no error given.

The strange thing is that certain programs can print, while others appear unable.

PROGRAMS THAT CAN PRINT:
  • Notepad
  • Windows Photo Viewer
  • Paint
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
PROGRAMS THAT CAN'T PRINT:
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • WordPad
  • Internet Explorer
  • Firefox
  • Chrome
I am using Windows 8.1 x64 (legal copy) and it is fully updated. All of my software is legal and updated.

I can print to other printers, network and local.

Other computers can print to this printer (all are Windows 7 x32).

Printer is set up on USB002 Virtual Printer Port.

I have tried using the drivers that came with my printer as well as downloading the latest drivers from HP's website.

I have searched for answers and came across man other people who seemed to be having the same problem. Here are some examples:

The consensus as far as I can see seems that there is a problem with the Windows System Files and that I need to use SFC to repair it.

This is what I tried to do.

After running SFC in an elevated command prompt and running "SFC /SCANNOW" I received a message saying that SFC could not fix something. I tried running the command multiple times (and also from boot).

I then proceeded to use Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management (DISM) tool to update the files and correct the problem. This appeared to work because after running DISM I then re-ran SFC /SCANNOW and received no error messages.

The problem is, it didn't fix my printer issue.

Here are some other things that I have tried in addition to the above with no effect:

  • Restarting
  • Deleting the printer, restarting, re-installing from a different USB port.
  • Punching the sky like no one is watching
  • Changing the USB cable to one I knew was working
  • Prayer
  • Run Printer Troubleshooter (but lets face it we knew that would do nothing)
  • Restarting the Print Spooler Service
  • Run WindowsUpdate to see if there is any printer related updates (there are no updates at all)
  • Run Antivirus update / scan (looooong shot)
I'd really appreciate any suggestions... tried to put as much details in this as possible so that other people with the same issue might find it.

Thanks in advance.

Nice job of presenting your issue with all necessary details included! However, since you have done everything that I can think of, I can only share my experience with HP printers and Windows 8.1. Now, the one I will refer to is the HP 1020 and that is also the one that is shown in your Example 2 link:

Windows 8.1: The printer would intermittently lose its default status after booting. I tried everything to get it to work consistently. I ended up using the driver (offered) from Windows Update and that fixed my issue. Now, I do understand this should not be your first choice but I'd try any port in a storm. However, I still get the Event ID 372 every time it prints but it works consistently now:

One other area you might want to investigate is "print management." There are several "specialized" Microsoft drivers there that may be impacting you ability to print from certain programs:

Please understand that I am not implying that any of the above is the direct cause of your issue; however, I just wanted to give you some more "food for thought." You have done a great job of troubleshooting your issue thus far! Good luck to you.

Hey SpringUpdate,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I have Windows 8 Core Edition (Windows 8 Basic, Home... whatever they call it these days).

Regardless, it appears that the version that I use does not allow me to run Print Management.

I was sure that was available in Win 8.0? So if you go to Administrative Tools, Print Management is not there? BTW, I got the 8.1 idea from your specs directly and your title also indicted it was an 8.1 issue as well.

Sorry what I mean is I have Windows 8.1 Core Edition, as in the cheapest version of Windows 8 that doesnt have all the "premium features". One of those features is Print Mmanagement...

That is strange. I was sure it was a core 8.0 and 8.1 feature but I can't confirm it. Anyway, maybe this?

Print management shortcut is not visible in Windows 8.1 - Babyraj.com

Or this: Run MMC from a command prompt. Then press Ctrl + m to view the available snap-ins:

Or, maybe someone else running the same OS version can help you. Anyway, good luck to you.

Yeah I tried manually adding it to a new MMC, it's not there. :(
