I bought a Samsung SE-218/RSBS external USB DVD burner that works perfectly with my Surface Pro 1. Dual Layer, and came with Nero, which works fine for common uses. It's also capable of running in AV Mode, which allows reading data dvd's with android devices, and playing MPG video off data dvd's when plugged into a media capable USB on a newer TV.

There are "Ultra-portable" drives that will work but not all will. One possible gotcha is that the USB port on the Surface may not be able to supply enough power for the external drive. If you use a Y-cable with the DVD drive you can plug the power part of the Y into the USB port on the Surface's AC charger. You could also use an external drive that has it's own power supply.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
The Samsung SE-218/RSBS is an 'ultraportable' that runs fine on a single USB2 cable. The Surface Pro 1 has more than enough power in it's USB3 port to reliably run it. I would suggest an inexpensive powered USB3 hub, though, makes it nice to attach multiple devices.
