Hey guys, first post and all. Hope i don't make any mistakes! :dinesh: I needed to ask as i've come from XP, when i installed 8.1 it installed drivers for my mobo so i had sound/net etc... and for my gpu aswell. Should i install the drivers from the manufacturer? Such as the realtek audio/lan/etc... and also my amd gpu? This is all abit confusing (and trying to navigate around)

If i were to install the Gpu driver would i just download it and install it with microsofts one there? And with the motherboard? Should i leave them there as i have sound/net etc... (haven't tried gaming yet)

Sorry if this has been asked a million times!

Welcome Melonhead. Yes it is best to install the manufacture site for motherboard/graphic card drivers.

Hey Dude, thanks for the welcome! :D If i were to install say the lan drivers/realtek audio drivers/usb etc... and the Amd latest gpu drivers could i just literally install them without having to worry about the ones microsoft put on here for me? (as in downloading now, and just click install not removing any of them?)

Windows 8.1 has me already confused! :p

Thank you for the reply!

Excellent, thank you. I wasn't sure as i'm finding it hard enough to even find where these folders are and was a bit worried if i could just 'overwrite' them so to speak ;)

Hi Melonhead,

Some good advice from Dude BTW but I would just like to add that it is important to include your specs when making such requests because that opens the door for some very specific recommendations. Moreover, in your particular case, I suspect your hardware may be somewhat older, since you are migrating from XP, and many manufacturers will not support their hardware all the way from XP through Windows 8.1. So, as Dude suggested, go to the manufacturer website first but if thy don't have the drivers you need, be prepared to provide your specs if/when you return.

Hey Dude and my2cents! I updated my rig spec!

Ok, yesterday i went to install my realtek sound drivers from asus. When i did i lost all sound completely (with Microsoft drivers it worked) So i uninstalled the realtek and microsoft reinstalled the standard ones and it worked again... it's made me kind of worried if to attempt to install the other drivers for the motherboard! I did however install the Gpu drivers and that went ok as far as i know!

Any advice would be great! :)

Hmm... I thought I was going to see some much older hardware because of the XP OS; however, not so. In fact, all is quite new!

it's made me kind of worried if to attempt to install the other drivers for the motherboard!

For the record, I do not "wholesale" install all drivers and software either. Just what I need...

So, right now, if you are using the integrated audio and it is working to your satisfaction, I (personally) wouldn't go any further until I perceived a need to do so; however, I'm sure that many will disagree and only recommend the latest and greatest so "to each their own." Good luck with your own decision on how to proceed from here.

I always install newest/ best drivers for everything, starting from chipset drivers, first thing after Win installation. Much performance and usability comes with proper drivers. Usability, because native Windows drivers are just bare minimum for HW to work and proper drivers (from respective manufacturers) come with programs for their fine adjustments. Windows drivers also tend to be very outdated and minimum would be to install drivers that came with that particular piece of HW.
Even HW makers have some problems with their drivers in the beginning and in some cases can take more than a year to get them right.

Hey my2cents and count mike! Yeah, i just upgraded recently from an old machine with Xp running... so all this is really new to me and sometimes confusing! If i were to say install more of the hardware drivers, if i uninstalled them due to them acting up would windows just redownload the ones i needed after an uninstall/restart?

The sound drivers was odd, i lost all sound with the realtek but was fine with windows own drivers. I heard Asus worked closely with win 8.1, but i dont really know! The gpu drivers installed fine for amd though. Thanks for your advice though guys!

You have same codec chip as mine.
You can try this driver for Realtec audio : Realtek
process for driver installation is not all that different than with XP.
