Missing SATA DVD drive?

Hi,

I am trying to install a graphics card in my desktop pc. The heat sink on the card blocks the SATA port that the DVD drive is plugged into (SATA1) so I've switched the DVD drive to SATA2. The drive is now showing as connected to port2 in the BIOS, but in windows (Win8 64-bit) it isn't detecting the DVD drive at all? I've seen other posts about this on the internet suggesting to add a line to the registry, but I've done that and it doesn't solve the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Just to add...it doesn't work in SATA3 either, only in its original position in port1.

Hi Shoie81,

Since none of our SATA experts have responded yet, I will make a simnple suggestion for you to try. Now, this may or may not work so here goes:

Go to your device manager and select view> show hidden devices. Now, look at your CD/DVD device. If the entry is greyed-out and when you right-click the entry, it shows a code of 45, you can delete that entry, reboot, and see if you DVD drive is now detected on the new SATA port.

Thanks my2cents,

All of what you said is true, error code 45. So how do I delete that entry?

Can you repeat the uninstall process again and then show us a disk management view like so?

Also, please insert a disc into the DVD drive and see what happens (after uninstalling as described above).

You said you modified the registry. Can you share that modification or try reversing it? Also, what are your system specs? Is the mobo Win 8 compatible?

OK, I have to go out for a while so I will leave you with one final suggestion:

Uninstall any profiles in device manager (as previously described).
Move you DVD device to SATA Port 2
Check device manager again to see if a new (greyed-out) profile was created with a code of 45.
If so, go back into your BIOS and disable hot-plugging for SATA Port 2 (if that option is available).
Reboot and see what happens.

Good luck,

Hi,

this is what the other posts I found said to add to the registry

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Didn't solve it for me although lots of other posters said it had solved it for them. PC was new last August and came with Win 8 on it so I assume MoBo is compatible - haven't had any other issues with it.

Have an intel i5 3.2Ghz processor with 8Gb RAM. MoBo is a Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 DVI

Hot-plugging is already disabled on all SATA ports - it was set up that way so I left it disabled.
