Can 8.0 chipset drivers be used for Windows 8.1?

I'm having a problem with system file corruption on two computers with ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2 motherboards and some resulting issues after upgrading from Windows 8.0 to 8.1. ASUS still doesn't have 8.1 chipset drivers available for their AMD motherboards but they have 8.1 for their Intel boards, which is interesting. I have been told by a third level MS Support person that the corruption is caused by a hardware issue and he refuses to troubleshoot the computer until the corruption is resolved. He said that in the 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade, Microsoft made some significant changes so he thinks that 8.1 chipset drivers should be installed.

Every few days, when I run sfc /scannow, it finds corruption. If sfc can't fix it, then I run the dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth command and eventually it gets fixed. In the meantime, some strange things happen with Window's operation but I don't get BSODs and other major things but the computer can hang for a while.

I have contacted ASUS but I get conflicting information from them. I see that here: ASUS Windows 8.1 - Ready Motherboard : Get you Onboard, that many AMD boards have passed the WHQL test (only very recently--the Intel boards had already passed some time ago) but when you click on any link to an AMD board, there are no 8.1 drivers available, even where it says they have some. I have been told by ASUS's Customer Care Manager that AMD provides the chipset drivers. I have spoken to AMD Support and they say that they do NOT provide motherboard drivers--the motherboard manufacturer does. I then told the ASUS Customer Care Manager this--then he said:

"ASUS would have to work with AMD in the development of such drivers, and
since our testing of Windows 8.1 with the current 8 drivers has worked without
further issues there is no word of further development of a Windows 8.1 chipset
driver set for that motherboard. It isn't deemed necessary as of now. This is
also due to the fact that AMD is working with ASUS to develop other products
with their FM2+ socket and APU processors such as the board in the link below:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132056

As far as the appropriate chipset driver for the Crosshair V Formula-Z, it is
already available but it the same driver that is used for 8, and the only
driver that needs to be updated further after that should be the USB 3.0
driver. The webpage you described is just dated and isn't meant to be used for
continued reference. Our product page just hasn't been updated to reflect the
information I am providing."

I wonder how much in depth testing ASUS did with the AMD boards which supposedly work fine running Windows 8.1 on a motherboard using 8.0 chipset drivers? I really need to get at the bottom of this and resolve this issue as soon as possible, so I am requesting your help!

Thanks.

As far as I know there were not to many changes from W8 to W8.1 in the way drivers work. Only one I know of is for some video card drivers. I have many drivers for Win7 and all works just fine.

The chipset drivers should be OK and not specific OS dependent.

There have been a few audio driver issues with 8.1 but that's all that I've seen.

Okay, so if the chipset drivers are not an issue, then what is causing the system files to become corrupted? I didn't appear to have any issues with system file corruption until after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1. After the upgrade, Windows has been reinstalled or repaired three times! So there is no installation issue. I have checked with LSI, the manufacturer of the RAID card and two Support people told me there are no issues with their cards. The RAM does not appear to be an issue,--especially since both computers are doing the same thing. I haven't been getting BSODs or hangs, although the computer my act strange not respond at times. I don't know how the INVIDIA Quadro 600 video card on both computers would be corrupting system files--the latest video drivers are installed and 8.1 compatible. So that leaves the motherboard. Is it really Windows 8.1 compatible? Again, the third level Microsoft Support person said that Microsoft made some significant changes in 8.1.

How can I find out what is causing the file system data corruption? (I attached screenshots of the last two times I ran sfc and dism to fix the corrupted files.)

Thanks.

On both my Gigabyte motherboard system and my ASUS motherboard system, which are both Intel Z77 chipsets, neither motherboard vendor has issued Windows 8.1 specific chipset drivers for my model boards, and both systems are working OK in Win 8.1. Actually Gigabyte has not issued any Windows 8.l specific drivers. The chipset driver for my ASUS motherboard is a 9/2013 version. The one for my Gigabyte motherboard has an earlier date.

What the difference between these and the AMD based systems ?????

I give up, what's the difference ?
AMD based systems from same manufacturer, are having driver issues with SATA controllers, specifically with AHCI drvers and some with USB3 drivers. My chipset 870a with v. 2.2 MB, does not have drivers past win 8 and only v3.0 - 3.1 have drivers for 8.1 and it's probably only because those versions have UEFI Bios.
Not too many HW manufacturers feel the need to support their products past EOL time. They all hope that new OS (or update) will be compatible with older drivers and just when incompatibility becomes too apparent ( like in case of AMD video cards before HD 5xxx ) they bring slightly modified "Legacy" drivers.
On the other hand, got to give MS some credit for not doing too many sudden changes and so wide range of HW still works albeit maybe not at their full potential because of drivers.

CountMike,

When you say that "AMD based systems from same manufacturer, are having driver issues with SATA controllers, specifically with AHCI drivers and some with USB3 drivers" Could you expound on this a little more? What or which manufacturers are you referring to?

In order to troubleshoot this issue further, I decided I would download and make sure I had all of the latest drivers installed for the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2 motherboard on one of the computers I'm, having problems with. I could not install 8.1 chipset drivers since ASUS doesn't provide them, so I installed the 8.0 chipset drivers.

I reinstalled the chipset, USB, SATA, and the AI Suite II utility in that order. After reinstalling the chipset drivers I rebooted and ran sfc /scannow to see if there was any chipset corruption. There was again, which sfc couldn’t fix so I ran the dism command and all files were finally repaired. I had just repaired the files two days ago.

During the install of the SATA drivers, the computer acted strangely. The monitor screen turned all blue and stayed that way for a while. Later, only the Task bar appeared, then disappeared, the Desktop picture appeared finally, but with no icons. Finally, the icons appeared. I found that the Start menu was blank on the right side (had no items like Documents, Pictures, Videos, and etc.) and the Window that I had open to run the ASUS SATA drivers install had disappeared. The computer was very sluggish in operation. I started to install the AI Suite II Utility Suite and waited perhaps two minutes for the Welcome Window to appear. It took approximately 13 minutes to install the suite but I didn’t install at least four of the items! I rebooted.

I did another file corruption check and sfc /scannow found system file corruption errors again that it couldn’t fix! So I ran the dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth command again and it fixed the corruption. This was the second time in just maybe around one hour I ran the two commands twice to repair system file corruption!

I get the impression that there is a problem or problems with the drivers on this computer running Windows 8.1. Does anyone have any more input on this issue? This is frustrating--especially since it's been going on for approximately 4 1/2 months--ever since I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1.

Thanks.

After I installed brand new Kingston V300 120 GB SSD I was getting dismal performance from it. Checked with few places and somebody pointed me to an AHCI driver, which I installed and all was back to normal. Now I can't put my finger on the place I downloaded it from but if it is possible I can send it to you. It's only 196 KB, zipped.
While looking for solution I run in quite few people with same problem all over the board. Now I'm not sure if it would help you any as my MB has 870 chipset and is not UEFI compatible.
A would be surprised if Asus did not release proper driver by now.

Those are actually chipset manufactures, no make or model of MB itself, so for instance, Intel is releasing their Irst drivers separately and AMD it's own that do not necessarily show up on MB manufacturer's sites. So it's best to look for them on Intel, AMD and Nvidia sites.
It doesn't necessarily mean that original drivers are bad or under par but I had that problem so I checked around and found something better and during that time run into a lot of people having similar problems. If you suspect that you have problem (SSD running much slower than it should) or some other problem than OK. chase drivers but if not, no new drivers are going to speed it up past their original specifications.
