No Turbo Boost and Core Parking in Windows 8

I have an i7 2630QM in my laptop. Sandy Bridge, like it very much, and so on.. :p

I was kinda surprised when I saw that according to Windows 8 Task Manager it never exceeds 2,0 GHz. :sarc: It's supposed to go to 2,8 with all four cores and in Windows 7 it does that very often.

Also, no Hyper-Threaded cores are ever parked, period. Windows 7 always parks four.

Is this something that occurs just on my system for some curious reason or is there something wrong in general?

I just installed Windows8 Consumer and am noticing the same thing on my laptop with it's core i5-2430M. It will sit idle at .8, and then up to 2.4 under load, but never exceeding to 3.1 like with Windows7. I'm think I may put 7 back on until this is fixed. There was quite a notice performance difference which is what led me to check the task manager to begin with.

Have you installed the turbo boost driver?

Thanks for noticing this guys.

I didn't tested my i5 in details and didn't saw any problems yet.

On the other hand the intel q6600 quad seems to have ony 1 physical processor and 3 logical, reported in Task Manager. This seems to be a bug.
It's a quad core with 2 physical and 2 logical or 4 physical procs (1 to 3 combination doesn't look real to me).

    That's basically it.
correction: the q6600 has only 4 physical processors. So it has to be something with task manager or drivers/hardware detection.

@kbronski,

I have installed the turbo boost drivers, and from what the gadget is saying it does work. The gadget does read and show speeds over 2.4 on my core i5, but this does not reflect in the task manager. The task manager will say 2.4 on full load while the gadget is showing 3.1. Which one is right?

After all I've seen: task manager is wrong by me.

You can't be serious! Turbo Boost driver! NO SUCH THING! Stop pushing your worthless driver detective. It is just spyware that takes money for drivers you can get automatically in windows update or from the website of the manufacture of your hardware. If you want to know the id of your hardware you can use device manager or Cpuz for free. Never pay for a driver that is supposed to belong to you anyway.

The options you described (turbo-boost and speedstep) must be enabled in the BIOS before Windows can use them. However, I am fearing that the manufacturer may have either disabled or hid those option to prevent any overclocking which could trigger a premature failure of components (and a request for warranty service). In any event, check your BIOS and see if they are available. If so, turn them on and see what happens.

EDIT:
Now, if it worked on Windows 7 (with same hardware), then maybe you need a BIOS update to make it compatible with Win 8. However, if you are trying to compare how Win 7 works on a different machine, then that machine's BIOS must have those options.

Here are the descriptions of those options available in my BIOS:

Good idea. Thanks for bringing it up again.

No I didn't. In Device Manager or by Intel installers I presume?

But there were tons of updates (software and hardware) in the meantime...
That post is nearly a year old and the machine was running on RP and 8.0 then. In the meantime those older machines use Win7 and where I use, test and see 8.1 running there are no CPU issues anymore.

If new issues will be seen somewhere, I will report them here on the forums.

Cheers!
