Got a 128GB (119GB real use) Adata S900 SSD. What is the best use for it? Storage or put the system on it? Already installed and recognized as drive (X).

Would like some expert opinions, it's why I ask. Thanks ahead of time.

For system BOOT disk, definitely. That's where you will see most improvement. Fantastic access times and fast read and write for smaller 4K files is what makes system faster. Programs load much faster from SSD, memory swapping, hibernation etc. is way faster. If you use it for data disk, all you get is some faster file copy HDD<>SSD is not very noticeable.

Thanks guys, I thought putting the OS on it was the best choice, wanted to be sure before going to the trouble. Appreciate the replies.

With new SSDs you don't have to thru the hoops like on old ones to "save" it from wear, now they are better than "spinners" and should even last longer. Just treat it like it's a HDD, no extra measures needed. If you do a "clean" install of Windows you will not have to do anything else except to set SATA port to AHCI mode in the BIOS before OS installation and connect it to first SATA port. Also it's much easier if you leave HDD out and only after the OS is installed connect HDD to the next port.

Also, do NOT overly "defrag" the drive, if u want to preserve it s longevity, SSD uses TRIM to sort of "Defrag" ,check out most Defrag program like _ O&o Defrag,Perfectdisk : - they usually analyze the SSD before doing a TRIM to optimize the SSD.

I thought TRIM was automatic with 8 and defragment is turned off for SSDs. No?

Yes, if you do clean install of windows 8 and AHCI is set. NEVER defragg an SSD, TRIM is used by OS to trigger GC (Garbage collecting) that is set in the SSD's firmware and it will run without regard of the OS. It is not even necessary to run TRIM manually it will be done by Windows automatically. Do not fall for some software claims that promise to "Defrag and optimize" SSD.
SSD disks have a spare area for juggling parts ("cells") and data so there is always a clean part to which to write data at fastest possible rate. All that stuff is going on without OS's influence. Beside GC, SSD's firmware juggles data occasionally so its divided into blocks that are accessible for reading in parallel and at same time and that's also a part of secret to their speed.

There's few more things to do. Once you install Windows and programs, use it couple of days, leave computer on over nite without any programs running, not even screen saver so it sorts itself out. Only than speed tests like CrystalDiskMark - Software - Crystal Dew World will be accurate. Do one test and save it for future reference, after a month, do another test and compare, by that time, it should be running at it's peak.
